On his knees in front of her, he looked so big and capable, his bare chest and muscular legs so strong and very male, but as he shared his fears, his expression was utterly vulnerable. “If I go back,” he said slowly, “they’ll destroy the little bit of me that’s still left. If I stay, I may never be able to give you what you want, what you need, what you deserve.”

His concern for her and her feelings told Monica everything, and her resolve to help him intensified.

“I deserve the man I want,” she replied as a desperate need to protect and support him swelled within her. “And I want you, Jake. I will find a way to make Darla let you go. And you will heal. I can wait however long you need.”

His hands tightened around her fingers, and she realized her whole body was shaking with the strength of the emotions surging through her.

“You’re trembling,” he said quietly, his troubled eyes searching her face.

She nodded. “You do that to me,” she said with a shaky smile.
