Yasmine Galenorn's (Otherworld # 15) Crimson Veil

Blurb:

(off Goodreads)

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: savvy half-human, half-Fae ex-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. My sister Camille is a wicked good witch with three gorgeous husbands. Delilah is a two-faced werecat and a Death Maiden. And me? I’m Menolly, a vampire married to a scorching hot werepuma. And right now, we’re facing enemies on all sides…

It’s been a long and devastating week. Back in Otherworld, war has decimated the elfin city of Elqaneve, our father has gone missing, and Shadow Wing has managed to obtain another spirit seal. On the home front, somebody burned down my bar, the Wayfarer, killing eight people, including a friend.

To make matters worse, we still haven’t found a way to stop Lowestar Radcliff—the daemon in charge of a supernatural corporate power grab. He’s attempting to awaken Suvika, the lord of vice and corrupt businessmen, and we have to stop him. Our enemies are closing in on all sides, and this time, there’s no place to hide

My Review:

The fifteenth book in the Otherworld series is an exceptional riveting paranormal read.  I have followed this series from the beginning and I love the wonderful characters and find the series to be very entertaining and even though there is continuing conflicts carrying over through each story, the author always manages to end each book at an opportune moment.

The Otherworld Series

(Off author’s site)

Ever wonder if the monsters under your bed are real...?

Meet the D'Artigo Sisters--three half human, half-Fae, wild and sexy members of the OIA--the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. Camille, a witch, Delilah, a werecat, and Menolly, an acrobat extraordinaire turned vampire, are sent Earthside to keep them out of trouble by their superiors, who consider the girls nothing but a bunch of bumbling half-breeds. But the girls soon find themselves smack in the middle of Demon-Central when Shadow Wing, the leader of the Subterranean Realms, decides to attempt a coup on both Earth and Otherworld. Now, with their friends and lovers, they must use all of their collective talents to prevent the demons from taking over as the three sisters attempt to save two worlds, one monster at a time. Adult Urban Fantasy (Explicit Sex)

About Menolly

(Off author’s site)

Menolly Rosabelle D'Artigo

Eye Color: frost blue, turning gray; blood red when she’s hungry or startled, cries bloody tears
Hair: mid-back length red hair, cornrows
Skin Color: pale to the point of scary
Height: 5’1”

Body Type: petite, slender
Age: app. 41 ES years at death (about 18 in Fae);

Birthday: First birthday: May 15th, 1953, Death/Rebirth Day: October 28, 1994
Abilities: Menolly is an incredible acrobat, except when it short-circuits. As a vampire, those acrobatic skills only increased, and she’s added vampiric abilities on, too. But she still finds it hard to manage some things—like turning into a bat.
Nicknames: Meni
Home: Y’Elestrial, Otherworld.

Menolly Rosabelle te Maria, or Menolly Rosabelle D'Artigo is the youngest sister, but she's had the roughest life. Always feeling on the outside of things, Menolly never quite fit into the family even as a child. She's a born acrobat--able to climb the side of walls, even hold onto the smallest of handholds to keep her braced against ceilings of caverns, etc. These talents led her to find works as a jian-tu (an acrobatic spy). That is, until her abilities short-circuited, and she fell into a group of rogue vampires on whom she was spying back in Otherworld. Their leader, Dredge, captured her, tortured and raped her, and then killed her. Menolly thought she was going to stay dead, and was horrified to find herself snatched away from the waiting arms of her dead mother back to her body, as Dredge brought her back, siring her as a vampire. He sent Menolly back home to destroy her family but she managed to resist for a short period of time. Menolly lost it and went mad, locking herself in the family panic room, while Camille went for help.

The OIA spent a year bringing her back from insanity, and they helped her learn how to adjust to her new life as a vampire. Against their better judgement, they allowed her to stay on in their employ, and Menolly chose to fight against the predator nature within. She feeds only on the low-lifes, the murderers, rapists, and scum. Unafraid to take on a challenge as long as it doesn't pertain to her love life, Menolly does what needs to be done and she has an almost scary sense of ironic justice. She stands up for the underdogs in life, because she was the underdog and no one was there to help her.

Until she met Nerissa, and had undergone a certain ritual to break her link with Dredge, Menolly had been afraid of hurting anybody she might get involved with, and still tends to shy away from letting anybody know just how horrendous her transformation was, or just how vulnerable she can be.

Menolly is an enigma. She’s always out to protect the underdog but has no problem offing the perverts of the world. She does what needs to be done—at times she seems callous, almost like she has no conscience whatsoever. At others, she seems like she cares too much.

She’s accepted that she’s a vampire, but she feels cut off from the world in many ways and she hid a lot of what happened to her from her family. She is very protective of her sisters even when they don’t know it, and forms a special bond with Iris and Maggie.

Menolly is bisexual, primarily focused on women. She's engaged to Nerissa, a werepuma--they've agreed to be exclusive when it comes to women, and to allow play with men if it's kept emotionally light. Menolly is also the official consort for Roman, the son of Blood Wyne (Vampire Queen)

Menolly first worked as a bartender in the Wayfarer Bar and Grill for her cover job, but ownership of the bar falls into her lap when Jocko, the gentle giant who worked for the OIA there, is killed by demons.

About Yasmine Galenorn

(Off author’s site)

Hi, I'm New York Times, USA TODAY, and Publisher's Weekly bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn.  In April 2012, I won a Career Achievement Award in Urban Fantasy at the Romantic Times Convention.

I write two urban fantasy series, the Otherworld Series, (aka Sisters of the Moon Series), and Indigo Court Series for Berkley. I will soon be writing a spin-off series in the Otherworld altaverse called the Fly By Night Series.

In the past, I've also written a paranormal mystery series (the Chintz 'n China Series) for Berkley Prime Crime, a short-lived mystery series (the Bath & Body Series) under the name of India Ink, again for Berkley Prime Crime, and eight metaphysical nonfiction books (Llewellyn Publications and Crossing Press).

I'm represented by Meredith Bernstein of the Meredith Bernstein Literary Agency--I adore my agent and am thrilled to have her on my side.

And yes, I'm a shamanic witch and am considered an elder in the Pagan community, having been in the Craft since February 29th (yes, leap year day), 1980.  I walk an eclectic path and consider my life to be a blend of teacups and tattoos--the former in my china closet, the latter on my skin--I'm heavily inked.  While I do run a small coven, I no longer teach magical workshops nor do I accept students or offer personal magical advice. However, you can find information my coven chooses to offer on this website.  I collect teacups, teapots, Old Country Roses china (Royal Albert), antlers and skulls (of the non-human variety), daggers and crystals.  And of course, my bookshelves are overflowing with books.  I cannot walk out of a bookstore without buying at least one book.  My TBR pile is huge!

I'm a theatre major, a 1983 graduate of the Evergreen State College (Olympia WA).  I started college when I was fifteen, skipping high school.  I took extra time to finish because of money considerations and a hiatus when I was 17, to hitchhike to California where I lived with one of my sisters for a brief time.

On Beltane, 1993 (May 1st) I married Samwise and we're still very happily married. We are the parents of one senior kitty and three young cats. Three of our senior gurlz went over the Bridge a few years ago and we still miss them terribly. We reside in the Seattle WA area.

Because so many people ask, you pronounce my first name this way: Yaz-mihn (NOT Jasmine--it's a "Y", not a "J") and our last name is pronounced: Gal-eh-norn. The accent is on the first syllable. Interesting trivia: Samwise and I created our last name together after we got married. At first, he took my last name, but I decided I didn't want to be stuck with my stepfather's last name forever.  So we decided to construct a name that would be ours alone and that would mean something to us.  We created our last name out of the Elvish in LOTR. Galenorn means Green Tree in Elvish, went to court, and legalized it. And yes, Samwise is his *real* name.
