Review of The Second Shadow by Elizabeth Arroyo

The Second Shadow picks up a few weeks after the first book ends, and Max and Gabby have relocated to Chicago for a fresh start where no one knows them.  Similar to the beginning of The Second Sign, Gabby is still getting into trouble at school, but this time it’s not because of her anger but from the strong visions she has now that her powers have evolved. She has transformed into an unusual supernatural being and is still learning to control and manage the competing powers that reside within her. One of the biggest mysteries to be uncovered over the course of the story is in discovering exactly what Gabby has become and trying to anticipate how she will respond to the external conflicts that occur.

It is clear now what the “Second Sign” means as well as the predestined roles that have been thrust upon Gabby and Jake. Yet they still have free wil,l and another major question to be answered is whether they will actually follow through with what is expected of them. The angels and demons involved have underestimated their love. Although I did have some doubts in book one about how genuine Gabby and Jake’s feelings really were for each other since supernatural forces were drawing them together, I don’t anymore. Even though they aren’t destined to be together, and Jake is now angry and bitter toward Gabby, their love for each other strengthens them in the midst of peril and uncertainty.  This second book also contains violence that may make squeamish readers uncomfortable.

All of the main characters have changed in dramatic ways since the beginning of The Second Sign. Gabby is emotionally stronger, and even though she doesn’t fully understand what the angels and demons are planning behind the scenes, she accepts and embraces her abilities, determined to do what is right to save humanity. She still has insecurities about her father and his faith in her, but she refuses to be discouraged by these doubts. Furthermore, Max has become much more supportive, reassuring her they haven’t lost their twin connection.

The climatic events in the first book have changed Max. He no longer blindly follows his angelic orders, and he is less critical and judgmental about the decisions Gabby makes. In fact, he helps her even when it isn’t in his best interest. Max’s goodness is so pure, and I want so much for him to find the love and joy he deserves.

And Jake…wow, he has drastically changed. His grief, anger, and vengeance have hardened him in ways that sometimes make it difficult for me to like him. Unfortunately, his fate was sealed before he was even born, and he now is more willing to succumb to his demons side. Because the story is still alternately narrated from both Gabby’s and Jakes POVs, I still have hope for him. His conflicting thoughts show that he hasn’t completely lost his humanity…yet.

I really like the new characters, Michelle and Jose, who inadvertently become involved in this paranormal chaos when apocalyptic events are set into motion.  Even though Jose is human and carries a lot of guilt about his past sins, he really steps up, even risking his life to help Gabby and Jake. I also think he plays a significant role in helping Jake fight his inner demon.  I have a feeling both of these new characters will become more prominent as the series progresses.

Although I enjoyed the first book, I was even more fascinated by this second installment because of all the shocking revelations and the OMG ending that absolutely made me want to cry.  Now, I’m hooked and eager to find out what will happen next.
