What the book has to say:
To save his love he must face his monster and—worse—be nice to people.
Montag is a monster. He doesn’t know what sort of creature he would turn into if he ever let himself shift, but he knows it’s something predatory and lethal. He fights back the urge to shift every day of his life, and has never dared get close to anyone—not that they want him to. He can literally smell their fear.
Kevin’s not scared of monsters. He works for the SSU, the agency in charge of tracking shifters—particularly the dangerous ones. When he and his young niece are kidnapped by her scum-bucket dad, he’s grateful to be rescued by Montag, whose curmudgeonly defenses can’t hide the kind man beneath.
As they work together to protect Kevin’s niece, attraction sizzles between them. But their relationship may not survive if Montag learns who writes Kevin’s paycheck—or if Montag dares to confront the inner monster he hates and fears.
Warning: Contains a grouchy virgin shifter (and we mean virginal in all possible ways), a hero with a back pocket full of secrets, and a couple of jerks.
What I have to say:
Montag is used to scaring people and since he doesn't like them much, he's pretty much a loner but something about Kevin won't let him stay away in this mesmerizing paranormal m/m romance.
Who knew rescuing someone would unleash all kinds of chaos and turn Montag's life around...certainly not him and the reader can't help but get caught up in all the emotional challenges that Montag faces when Kevin disrupts his life. The attraction between Kevin and Montag is a smoldering, ball of fire just ready to explode into some hot and steamy passion and these strong compelling characters grab the readers attention from the very beginning and are easily related to with Montag capturing the heart with his grumpy and contradictory personality while the steady to fast paced plot captivates readers with suspense, excitement and passion.
Anticipation and intrigue builds throughout the story as some bad men threaten Kevin and his family which puts lots of pressure on Montag which causes some emotional turmoil when Montag has to confront his inner monster and be nice to people. The scenes and details are well written and capture the imagination while the well orchestrated events ensure that the reader wants to know every last word.
The author has created a fascinating world of shifters living in an uncertain world with some interesting and different elements and I was completely caught up in the story from the very beginning although I must say that I probably should have read the previous books in the series first but only because I think I would have had a better understanding of the world that these unique shifters live in.
