Barbara Ann RS's Blog – March 2014 Archive (10)

Review of Mine to Crave (Crave # 4) by Cynthia Eden

Cynthia Eden is a prolific romance writer and has written a number of series that have caught my interest. Although I have read and greatly enjoyed her For Me series, I had not had the chance to read any of the books in the Mine series until now with this fourth installment. When I began reading the book, I soon realized that characters and aspects from previous storylines in the series are more interconnected than I expected, and I worried that I might not be able to fully enjoy and…

Review of Caught in the Crosshair by Barb Han

Caught in the Crosshair is an inviting blend of tension-filled romance and suspense between Lauren and Jaden whose romance blossoms in the midst of a dangerous situation revolving around a South American Cartel, a rescue attempt, an island hurricane, and escapes from a constant barrage of bullets. Hans pulled me into the book quickly and easily by starting off with adrenaline-packed action that is practically non-stop in the first half of the book. I initially had a difficult time…

Reviews of Julia Heaberlin's novels: Lie Still & Playing Dead

Review of Lie Still

Lie Still appealed to me because it is set in North Texas, where I live, and Heaberlin does a great job of emphasizing the regional characteristics of this area, its locale, expressions, food, and the overall idiosyncrasies that distinguish Texas from anywhere else. Although Heaberlin may be considered a regional writer, the themes of her novels are certainly universal, transcending geographical limitations.

Heaberlin has woven…

Review of Shadow of Deceit by Mal Olsen

Mal Olsen’s Shadow of Deceit is a romantic suspense brimming with sexual tension between two people dealing with personal tragedies that have left them scarred and afraid to take a chance on love.  When Shannon Riedel is threatened and asked to return goods owed from her deceased husband’s unfinished gem mine deal, FBI agent Tony Crazaniak becomes her shadow, sticking to her, as she compares it, like toilet paper stuck to the bottom of one’s shoe. Shannon unwittingly finds herself…

Review of Reaper's Touch by Eleri Stone

Reaper’s Touch is one of those unusual, creative novels that doesn’t neatly fit into one particular genre. Instead it’s a genre mash-up incorporating elements from western, paranormal romance, dystopian, and steam punk fiction.

Stone pulled me into an alternate universe replete with an old west landscape, zombie invaders, and airships all surrounding a centralized government where the affluent reside in extravagance while the rest of society live in harsh conditions struggling…

Review of Beneath the Surface by Miranda Rae Carter

Carter has written a young adult fantasy that I’m sure will appeal to many teenage readers because of the storytelling, the action and adventure, and book’s romantic angle. Teens are the primary targeted audience as the author takes her readers “beneath the surface” into the world of the Malions, a species of paranormal beings who are known for their miraculous healing abilities. Hunted for years by the Vykhars, who seek to destroy their race, the Malions live in secret, underground, and…

Review of Hard As You Can (Hard Ink #2) by Laura Kaye

Laura Kaye has written another fantastic, thrilling installment in the Hard Ink series. If you enjoyed Hard As It Gets, then you do not want to miss Hard As You Can, which I enjoyed even more than the first book.  To follow the series, you do need to start at the beginning since the plot is a continuation of the external conflicts already introduced. The Hard Ink team is back in action as they search for the truth behind a cover up that cost five dedicated Army special ops…

Review of If You Only Knew by Dixie Lee Brown

This is the second novel in the Trust No One series that I’ve read, and just like with When I Find You, Brown keeps her readers engaged. The plot is suspenseful and has some eyebrow-raising revelations that add unexpected twists to keep the story from being predictable. In the midst of the danger, the hero and heroine struggle to rekindle their stalled relationship, which has never really progressed beyond friendship althoughtheir feelings for each other run much deeper.

If…

Review of Better off Dead: The Lily Harper Series #1 by H.P. Mallory

All of this cold, wet February weather was really starting to get to me, so I browsed through my library looking for a good plot with a romantic angle and plenty of humor.  H.P. Mallory’s first book in her new Lily Harper series was exactly what I needed to pull me out of my funk. This was my first time reading H.P.Mallory’s work, and Better off Dead is a hilarious start to what looks like a delightful paranormal series with a future romance in the making.  After Lily Harper dies in a…

Review of Branded (Sinners #1)

“You can overcome anything…short of death.” –C. Hamilton, Branded

When I read the book description for Branded, I knew I wanted to read this young adult dystopian novel that is set in a fictitious world where our current judicial system has been turned on its head. No longer are citizens considered innocent until proven guilty. Instead, the accused are immediately arrested, found guilty, and sent to spend the rest of their life in the “Hole”. No evidence…
