Interview with author G.P. Ching

Tell us a little bit about your book.

In Wager’s Price, Finn Wager is the mastermind behind Deviant Joe, an internet channel dedicated to posting the best pranks he and his three best friends can come up with. Through no fault of his own, his latest prank goes terribly wrong and he is sentenced to complete his High School years at reform school called Revelation’s Institute.

An admission to Revelations is by invitation only, and the school boasts a perfect success rate for redeeming delinquents. Finn is grateful for the opportunity and to avoid the prison-like Lakeview Alternative School. But it doesn’t take long for Finn to realize that something sinister is behind the Institute’s miraculous ability to reform students.

They say that what does not kill you make you stronger, but Finn Wager believes the classes at Revelations may be turning him into something else entirely. And if he and his new friend Hope can’t solve the mystery of the school, death might be far preferable to the consequences.

Have you published before?

Yes. I am a USA Today bestselling author of the six book Soulkeeper’s Series, and The Grounded Trilogy.

Are you currently working on anything else?

I am currently finishing the sequel to Wager’s Price—Hope’s Promise, Book 2 in the Soulkeepers Reborn Trilogy.

What is your favorite writing snack?

I love to snack on popcorn while I write! And I drink tons of coffee.

What gets you in the mood to write?

I usually feel the most creative in the late morning. Music and art of all kinds can also put me in the mood to write.

Who is your favorite character and why?

Although I love all of my characters, there is a special place in my heart for Hope. She’s spent her entire life knowing she’s the last Soulkeeper and that someday she’d have to live up to the name. Although she trains with an angel named Gabriel, she tries her hardest to be a normal human girl, performing with the dance team at her high school, going to parties, and generally avoiding the parts of her role that are more than she’s ready for. So when she’s accused of a crime she didn’t commit and sent to Revelations, knowing that she must solve the mystery of the lost souls, she does so reluctantly.

There’s a part of the book where Hope is undergoing a painful and terrifying trial, and she vocalizes her anger toward God. As a Soulkeeper, she knows first hand that there is a God because He is responsible for her role and the angel who trains her. But for her, that makes her suffering far, far worse. Because knowing there is a God allowing her to suffer seems cruel compared to believing her pain is completely due to chance. So, she’s rather bitter and sullen about her lot in life.

I find her character utterly relatable. I wrote this book right after losing a young family member to a demon of a disease and while my sister endured treatment for AML. Faith is hard in times of trial, no matter what religion you are. Even as an atheist, I think it can be hard to have faith in yourself or others when it seems everything is going wrong. Hope represents that universal struggle in this book.

Favorite book of all time?

I could never pick just one. Here’s a list of some of the books I have in hardcover on my bookshelf:
1. The entire Harry Potter series by JK Rowling

2. The Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J Maass

3. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

4. The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah

5. The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer

6. The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

7. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

Every Sunday morning my husband makes me heart-shaped waffles and bacon. It’s the perfect breakfast, but not because of the waffles and bacon.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

I write fantasy, so it’s not that I’d like to live in a different time but maybe in a different world. I love magic and magical creatures, so it would be great to live in a world where those things exist.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

If you love action, adventure, magic and fantasy, Wager’s Price will keep you turning the pages well past your bedtime!

From the bestselling author of the THE SOULKEEPERS comes a new series about dark magic, redemption and an unusual theater with life or death stakes…

Finn Wager’s luck has run out. Arrested for the one crime he didn’t actually commit, he’s forced to finish his education at an alternative school. The Revelations Institute is an upscale, private reform school with a 100% success rate. Delinquents go in and model citizens come out.

But students who don’t perform to expectations disappear. And although their bodies return model citizens, their minds are hardly their own. Something evil lurks inside Revelations, and if Finn and his new friend Hope can't find a way to stop it, they’ll risk more than their lives. The repercussions could cost them their souls.
