Book Tour & Early Review: Forbidden (Sazi of Luna Lake #1) by Cathy Clamp

Q: What made you decide to take the fascinating Sazi world in this direction?

A: That’s actually an interesting story!  It all came out of a meeting with my editor. I occasionally have the opportunity to visit New York, and actually visit the publisher’s office. A few years ago, I was attending the Thrillerfest convention in Manhattan, and called my editor to see if she had a few minutes to just chat. We actually started as friends before she became my editor. She was a fan of the series and we’d met at a convention years before. We were talking about the Sazi world—Serpent Moon had released the year before and I told her I was sorry the series had ended because there were more stories to tell. She agreed and said she’d always wondered what happened to the kids that Sargon and Nasil had kidnapped. We hadn’t done much other than get them out of the caves in Moon’s Fury (book 5) and then other stories took over. I told her it would be fun to do some stories about a few of the kidnapped kids who had been turned and what happened to them. We both got excited as we thought about a dystopian future where lots of people have been affected by both the snake attack and the cure. They were different things that just happened to coincide by the snakes realizing they could eliminate their enemies at someone else’s hand. We walked down the hall and got the publisher involved in the discussion. Of course, an author always hopes the actual head of the publisher has heard of them. Come to find out, he’d read the books and really liked the idea of doing a “ten years later” concept. Then it was just a matter of figuring out how the world would work. A refugee camp that became a permanent home seemed to make sense. That has happened all over the world after wars. Luna Lake was born!

Q: The Sazi of Luna Lake makes it sound like the stories will be based on just the Sazis in the town of Luna Lake with appearance of other Sazi of course, but if the series goes well, are you planning on branching out— maybe with Sazis in other towns for spin-offs?

A: The first three stories will be set in Luna Lake. The question is whether the town will survive all three stories. There’s lots left to be told about the town and the mysterious residents!

Q: During the story, there were obvious effects left over from the cure in the previous series but there were some that could have been from what the evil mastermind was doing to the town. Have you thought about the different directions you could take those effects–like some could have gotten stronger or differing abilities from before. I guess like saying the cure mutated during the ten years are all the effects going to stay on the negative side of things as was intended with the cure?

A: To an extent, readers of the first series saw some of the effect. In Howling Moon, Michael Santiago was an victim of an early batch of the cure. It drove him insane. Well, that and being mated to Cat. Angelique, the raptor council member, and Fiona Monier, were also negatively impacted by the cure. What happens to them will come back around in book 2, ILLICIT, to hit shelves in 2016.

Q: And speaking of after-effects, what happened to Lucas? And Nasil? Did Bobby and Asri’s kids survive? Will they be featured in future books? So many people I want to know more about!

A:   Yeah, there were a lot of loose ends, weren’t there? As you’ll discover in FORBIDDEN, Lucas is still head of Wolven. What is he? Human or wolf or snake? Well . . . that one I’ll have to keep secret for now. LOL! But I promise that fans will know by the end of these first three books. Nasil is still out there. Is he plotting to return to take Sargon’s place? Not yet. He’s been sort of sick of being the bad guy. At least for the moment. But plans can change, can’t they? He is a bit of a power and prestige addict. And he has evil tendencies, or at least his morals are . . . loose. Heh.  And yes, Bobby and Asri’s children survived. They’ll be tweens now and might appear in later books—provided we have more books in the future. For now, know they’re safe and I have ideas to use them if we get past the first three books. You’ll also find out more about the Monier clan in ILLICIT. Both Amber and Rabi Kuric make guest appearances! Remember Rabi, leader of the ghost tiger clan, from Captive Moon? And there will be bears in ILLICIT! I haven’t had the chance to write about werebears yet.

Q: The original series was co-authored with C.T. Adams. What (if any) differences did you find in working on the new series? Was it harder? Slower? Or just different?  Do you still bounce ideas around with C.T. Adams?

A: It really wasn’t all that different. The way that Cie and I wrote was Lead Author/Secondary Author. So one person would write the whole book, and the other author would go through it after it was written and make edits to the text. I actually fully authored all but two of the original series. Cie wrote Howling Moon and Timeless Moon. I wrote the rest of them. Now the edits are done by my editor. So it really doesn’t feel any different. No, Cie and I don’t really bounce ideas anymore. We wanted to go different directions in both this series and the Blood Singer. I think that talking about the books would be going backwards in a way. I prefer to move forward.

Q: Where do you see the Sazi of Luna Lake going? I mean town-wise, is the town going to become this awesome Sazi community that continually grows or is it going to remain this small secreted community?

A: There’s a big question whether the town will survive all three books. The town itself is almost a character. It’s not just a place. There’s a reason why the Sazi have owned the land there for hundreds of years. What’s the reason? Wait and see... ;-)

Q: Is Claire and Alek going to be the main focus of the series or is it going to be different characters for each book?

A: Different characters for each book. Claire and Alek will be involved, definitely, but the next book focuses on Rachel Washington, who was also one of the attack victims. And book 2 also introduces the lead for book 3, DENIED, which I’m just starting on, and will be released in 2017. Anica Petrovic is a black bear shifter, and a kidnap victim from a previously unknown European branch of the Sargon war machine. Lots of fun stuff coming in future books. I know you’re going to love them!
