Tell us a little bit about your book. What inspired you to write this book?

Unbridled Trails is book 3 in the Montana Trails series. The overall series arc follows Nate and Emma from book 1, but this book is about one of the cousins and his penchant to go after bad guys and save damsels-in-distress. Sherri doesn’t want to be a victim. She wants to save herself… and the bugs. I’m not sure what inspired me. It’s hard to pinpoint the one thing, you know?

Have you published before?

Oh, yes. I have over 40 books out.

Are you currently working on anything else?

Always! I have 4 projects I’m working on besides my courses.

A little about you…..

What is your favorite writing snack?

I work too early to snack. Lol. I’m still half-asleep!

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

Huge omelet filled with all kinds of meats and veggies with a HUGE side of hashbrowns. Toast optional. But if the calories didn’t count? I’d add a plate of waffles topped with so much syrup it’d make a diabetic weep.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

I would love to live in a simpler time. There’s so much going on these days, it’s enough to make you spin.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

Everyone is looking for the cowboy and the action and a reason to stay up late to read.

Interview with the author, Roxy Boroughs

Tell us a little bit about your book.

I started with the age-old question: if you could go back in time and kill someone like Hitler, would you?

What if you’re sent back to make sure a person like Abraham Lincoln died? What if your task is to protect his assassin? What if the future depends on it?

That was my starting point for WOLFEN TIME.

Special ops werewolf, Rafe Garrett, is sent on such a mission. If he fails, millions of innocent people will die.

Unfortunately, his goal collides with the heroine’s. As Stacy begins to fall in love with Rafe, she learns that for history to realign, she must sacrifice someone dear to her heart.

Big conflicts. High stakes. And a lot of lovemaking along the way.

Have you published before?

Yes. I’ve got a steamy romantic suspense series, and a Christmas series that features cozy mystery paired with a sweet romance. I’ve even got a romantic comedy with a cowboy hero.

Are you currently working on anything else?

I like to bounce between genres, so I’m currently working on a third book in my Psychic Heat series. It’s a romantic suspense and will complete the trilogy.

What is your favorite writing snack?

I have an ever-present cup of tea at my side. To cut back on caffeine, I’ve started drinking rooibos teas—with all sorts of flavorings. Maple, crème caramel, even chocolate. It’s like drinking dessert!

What gets you in the mood to write?

I have a series of musical soundtracks I use. They came in especially handy when I was writing a new story in the Frost Family Christmas series last July. I’d sit in my shorts, with the air conditioning on full blast, and listen to Christmas tunes.

For WOLFEN TIME, I wanted a driving beat, so I mostly listened to Apocolyptica.

I play only instrumental music when I’m writing. I find it difficult to type words when I’m listening to vocals.

Who is your favorite character and why?

As far as my books go, I love all of my characters. Even the villains. Of course, I focus the most on my hero and heroine. In WOLFEN TIME, that’s Stacey Cadell and Rafe Garrett. They’re both damaged, but they don’t give up. They’re fighters. And, as it turns out, lovers.

Favorite book of all time?

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. I love everything about it—the innocence of the children vs the cruelty of prejudice, the spooky next door neighbor who ends up being the savior, and Atticus, who reminds me of my own dad.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

Since my mom passed away, I’ve been having her favorite breakfast—a boiled egg on toast. (I add some ketchup, though, which she never did.)

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

I once had a job giving tours in historical houses, and had beautiful Victorian outfits to wear. I felt like a princess every day.

I’ve always had an affection for the silent movie era. I would have loved to be a film star back then. Again, great clothes. And cars.

And I think it would have been cool to live in ancient times—in Greece or Rome. Of course, as a woman, I would have been a second-class citizen back then. So maybe it wouldn’t have been so wonderful, after all.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

WOLFEN TIME is a meaty story that’s got everything—high drama, adventure, seductive villains, a sexy hero, a kickass heroine, and a sensual and heartwarming love story. Enjoy!

All that separates them...is a century or two. Werewolf Rafe Garrett is second-in-command of a twenty-third century special ops team, sent back to present day Seattle to stop a group of renegade vampires from destroying the U.S. and causing the deaths of millions of innocent people. He has a personal vendetta, too. The renegades' leader is the same bloodsucker who murdered Rafe’s pregnant wife. Few humans can stake a vampire on their first try, but Stacy Cadell is that kind of gal—a ball of fire in a cool, petite package. Caught in the battle between vampires and werewolves, Stacy hides her true identity from both sides, fearing it could be used against her. But protecting her heart from the werewolf warrior with the killer good looks, is a fight she’s sure to lose. Especially when she learns that, for history to correct itself, she must sacrifice the one person she holds most dear. Contains: Hunky, alpha werewolves running around naked, sensual love scenes and mature language. If you read sweet romance, try CRAZY FOR COWBOY, or one of the novels from the series ‘A Frost Family Christmas.’

And my greatest professional thrill was acting on the same stage as Sarah Bernhardt—though not in the same century. I’ve had small parts in a few movies and TV shows, including the hit programs HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS and DEGRASSI JUNIOR HIGH. Writing is rather similar to acting, I believe. Except I get to play ALL the characters…while wearing my PJs and sipping tea. What could be better? I’m married to my first love—a wonderful guy. So I don’t just write romance, I live it!

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series? Plugged is a YA Time Travel novel, book 2 in the Rewind Agency Series. It follows Lara Crane as she tries to undo the damage she did in the first book after she changed the past. Now she’s being held captive, like a mouse in a cage, and must struggle against her own mind to obtain freedom.

Do you have a favorite character? Lara is my favorite character of the series for sure. How could she not be? She’s impulsive, rash, but she never gives up. Her spirit is never broken. She is always searching for a new way out. She loves, cares, and is a compassionate character, no matter what is happening to her.

Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all? In the Dream Slayer series, I created a one off villain who was only supposed to exist in the opening sequence. Like a monster of the week in an episode of Supernatural, or Buffy. He was so much fun to write for and changed so much of the course of the novel, that he ended up in 6 of the 7 books.

If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover? I’m always very involved in the cover process, even if I don’t know exactly what I want. I usually have a theme or feeling I want to convey and have complete creative control over images, fonts. We went through several drafts of Plugged before we found what I was looking for and I am so so happy with how it turned out!

What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence? To be honest, it depends on the book and the scene. If I am going to listen to music it is almost always instrumental, like a movie or video game soundtrack. For Plugged I listened to music thorough out the entire novel and listened to the Mass Effect 3 soundtrack.

Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you? I don’t believe in outlining. It kills my creative process. I write a small 250 word blurb and start writing from there.

Besides writing, do you have any other passions? Spending time with my 5 year old daughter, teaching her, and being present is really the only other passion I have time for right now! Home renovations are a close third, I suppose. My husband is a woodworker and I am always finding pictures of some piece of furniture I want him to recreate!

What’s next for you? I want to write the next Rewind Agency novel, finish the Glistening Haven series if I can focus enough. I also have a scifi romance novel in mind, and would like to sink my teeth into a zombie idea I’ve had for awhile. I won’t spoil the surprise though, so I’ll keep that plan under my hat.

I could write this in the third person. I could tell you what I like, where I was born, and what my favorite things are.

But instead, I’ll say I don’t want to write like everyone else. I don’t want to craft stories you’ve read a thousand times before. I want my novels to be a cinematic experience, blending themes, genres, and situations unlike any you’ve ever read.

I want to break the rules. I want you to break out in a cold sweat as you read my books out of fear, love, and excitement. I want my books to be an experience. When you finish, I want you to feel something. Good or bad.

If you do, then I’ll have succeeded. If not, I’ll keep trying.

1. Tell us about your latest book.

Two Brothers: Heritage, YA sci-fi is the second in the Ramtalan Trilogy and it steps up the action and the struggle of half-human, half-alien twin brothers Argus and Tai to understand the world around them. They’re far from ordinary teenagers, although deep down, that’s all they want to be. While Tai is held captive at the Citadel, the Ramtalan headquarters on Earth, Argus finds himself mixed up in the long-time battle between hostile Invaders and his friends, the Ramtalans. The boys are in for a surprise when they learn more about their father and have to continue their evasion of Max Jackson from AURA, the Astronomical Urgent Recovery Administration. With everything that’s going on, Argus still tries to maintain a semblance of a relationship with his human girlfriend, Lola.

2. Where did the idea for the book come from?

I really enjoy young adult fiction, especially science fiction, and after raising three daughters (yep, I had three teenaged daughters in the house at the same time) by myself, I thought it would be fun to write about teenaged boys. Of course, these boys aren’t entirely normal, but still, they are teenagers!

3. Who and what inspire you to write?

I’m inspired by every writer, everyone who puts pen to paper-well, fingers to keyboard-to create something purely out of their imagination. That’s a gift and there are so many fabulous, incredible writers out there, I couldn’t even begin to pick one. As for what inspires me to write, that came from my childhood. I was born in Australia and we moved to the United States when I was young, so I still had a strong accent. I was bullied and teased because I was different, so I quickly learned that if I stayed to myself with a notebook, I’d be left alone, more or less. So, I started writing as a way to escape the world around me and create wonderful, happy places and people.

4. Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?

Just what I said above! It was self-preservation really.

5. What has been the most pleasant surprise about writing? How about an unexpected down side?

The best thing is getting published and seeing all that hard work produced into a lovely book. Hands down, that’s what it’s all about for me. Down side? All of the work that comes after the book is published! It’s amazing just how much there is to do, with marketing, promotion, social media, presentations/talks/signings. It cuts into writing time for sure, yet I manage to find a way. I have to because I have to finish Book Three!

6. Do you have any writing rituals?

No really. I suppose a sort-of ritual might be that when I first start writing for the day, I need a cup of chai or something doesn’t seem right. So, yeah, I guess that’s a ritual!

7. Do you write your books in order?

Pretty much. For me, I have to have the beginning set before I can continue, which means I will usually edit that opening chapter before starting on chapter two. That doesn’t mean it has to be perfect, but it has to be good enough for me to move on. And like every author I think, I jot down plot elements, characters, dialogue or whatever when I think of them, and save them until I need them.

8. Any favorite writing snacks?

Other than chai and diet Coke, I do like to nibble on popcorn, cashews and carrot sticks. That’s not too bad, right?

9. What advice would you give writers who aspire to be published?

It’s kind of cliché, but I would stress not to give up. If you want to get published, don’t stop writing and make sure you get critique, preferably from a critique group made up of several other writers. If you can edit your own work, and do a very, very good job, then you might be able to skip using a professional editor, but otherwise, find a great editor and have them work their magic on your manuscript before you ever query. And don’t forget the query letter. That, like your manuscript, must be perfect. It’s the first impression an agent or publisher will get from you!

10. Are you working on anything new right now?

Other than Book Three, yes. I’m about ¾ of the way through another YA sci-fi with a girl protagonist this time, and an adult thriller. There are a couple of already complete manuscripts that I’m editing in between. Sometimes it’s hard to concentrate on one manuscript, but I’ll get to a point where I want to finish one, so the others will go on the back-burner.

11. Who is your favorite character in your current book?

I love them all, but I’m really fond of Argus and his girlfriend Lola. They have a lot in common, although their journeys are very different, and I can’t wait to see what happens to them in the third book.

12. What is your favorite book of all time?

The Call of the Wild by Jack London. My dad bought it for me when I was probably around eleven and I couldn’t stop reading it. I’ve read everythinig else by Jack London, but The Call of the Wild is my favorite. For sci-fi, it’s Ray Bradbury, Jules Verne, and of course, H.G. Wells. Then, for pure fun, it’s Clive Cussler and his books. Oh, how can I forget J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter!

13. Tell us in one sentence why we should read your book.

Everyone struggles with growing up and the transition from teen to adulthood, even half-aliens who have to deal with the typical issues of school, bullies, girls, being popular, and protecting the world from hostile Invaders.

THE DEVIL'S BREATH is the 5th novel in my Sydney Rye Series of mysteries. This series feature a courageous female protagonist and her canine best friend, Blue. It is recommended for adults who enjoy some violence, don't mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

One of Sydney Rye’s dearest friends, Hugh Defry, has been accused of brutally murdering his business partner. All the evidence points to Hugh and he has no memory of that night. But Sydney refuses to believe that Hugh is capable of such violence.

Called to investigate by Robert Maxim, a man she has, until now, considered her greatest enemy, Sydney flies to Miami searching for the real killer. Her investigation leads her from the mansions of Star Island to the depths of the Everglades. Rye’s suspicions are raised when she learns that Robert Maxim not only wants to work together, but also wants to build a friendship. She doesn’t begin to understand Maxim's motives until her former lover, Dan, arrives in Miami to tell her a devastating secret.

As more people from her past turn up, and not knowing whom to trust, Sydney begins to recognize that her personal fight for justice has become much more than she'd ever imagined. Sydney is pushed towards making a decision that will change not just her life, but possibly the future of crime fighting.

Where did the idea for the book come from?

My character Sydney Rye told me this was the next book and I always listen to her. She wanted to take me to Miami because it has such a rich history of criminal activity. It seemed the perfect place to face her arch nemesis, Robert Maxim, again.

Who and what inspire you to write?

Everything inspires me to write especially travel and reading.

Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?

I’m severely dyslexic so most of my childhood I couldn’t read but desperately want to. I was lucky enough that my family lived near a school on the cutting edge of learning differences and when, at age 11, I finally figured out what all those weird squiggles on the page meant I felt that I’d finally been let into a secret world and I never wanted to leave.

I thought my life with books would be exclusively as a reader since someone who can’t spell well shouldn’t write books. So I became a photographer right out of high school and lived in London then ended up in Brazil for awhile and when I came back to New York, two years later, I decided to go to college.

I was taking a required writing course when 9/11 happened. I wrote about it in a way that helped me to deal with the terrifying tragedy. When people read my work they responded strongly and that was the first time I realized how truly powerful the written word could be for me and my readers.

About a year later, I was on the subway reading a mystery novel where a cat solves the crime and the killer is aliens. I thought, f#ck it, I can do better than that. I was working as a dog-walker at the time. It was during hours of strolling the Upper East Side with a variety of canines by my side that I came up with the characters of Sydney Rye and Blue. I’ve been writing about them ever since.

What has been the most pleasant surprise about writing? How about an unexpected down side?

The most pleasant surprise is how much easier it’s gotten. It took me 5 years to write my first book and 8 to publish it. Since then I’ve published another four books and can now write a first draft in a matter of months. Oh, and my writing is so much better than it used to be. Sure, some days it’s still like pulling teeth to get the words out but most the time they fly and leap across the page, surprising me at every turn.

I’d say the most obvious downside for a fiction writer these days is a lack of stability. It’s impossible to tell what will happen in the next weeks let alone year the way things are shifting in publishing right now. But, that is also an upside because opportunity comes out of change. And boy are things a changin’

Do you have any writing rituals?

About a gazzilion and I’m always coming up with new ones. First draft, I put up a sign that says “It doesn’t have to be good. It just has to be done”. When writing I put on headphones and sip tea. I do a 750 word purge before I begin my session where I just spew out anything that’s on my mind. I take long walks on the beach, ride horses into the woods, read tons of books, pace, talk out loud, and let the wheels turn without judgement or purpose.

Do you write your books in order?

I start where ever I want to. One of my rules is don’t write it if you don’t want to. Because if I’m bored creating it imagine how the reader will feel. For STRINGS OF GLASS I wrote the last chapter first. For THE DEVIL’S BREATH I wrote the first chapter first. For #6 which I’m working on now, I also started with the first chapter. I don’t stay tied into any kind of structure in the beginning though. I just write what I see and if I trust it and follow my characters it all comes together in the end.

What is on your writing playlist for this book?

Have you heard the soundtrack for Drive? I basically put that on repeat for the last couple of months with a little Robyn thrown in.

Any favorite writing snacks?

I don’t snack while I write but I do drink copious amounts of tea.

What advice would you give writers who aspire to be published?

Keep writing and reading. Finish your book, edit it, get a friend to read it. Rewrite it. Hire someone to edit it. Rewrite it. Hire another person to edit it. Rewrite it. Get one last person (or a team of people) to make sure there are no more little mistakes. Then publish it. Oh, and while all this editing is going on, start the next one. And don’t forget to get a great cover.

Are you working on anything new right now?

Yup, Sydney Rye #6 is in the works. I’m in Costa Rica right now, where it takes place.

Who is your favorite character in your current book?

Blue, the dog in my books, is always my favorite character. And, of course, Sydney Rye who actually tells the story. I’m also in love with the rest of the cast. I even have a soft spot for the bad guy.

What is your favorite book of all time?

Pride and Prejudice.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your book.

It will keep you up late at night, squirming in your bed, dying to know what happens next.

Keeper of Reign Book 1 is a young adult/middle grade fantasy about a young Elfie, Jules Blaze, who lived in the Kingdom of Reign. The Elfies are a blend of Elves and fairies, and used to be big and normal, like us humans, but something triggered a curse and the entire Race was reduced. This happened centuries ago. Now, they just sort of accept life the way it's always been--sort of like us humans when we get used to a rough patch and don't do anything about it. In the story, Jules, the sixteen year old , wanted to take matters into his own hands, because he really believed he could make a difference. Except things spiraled out of control in his life as one by one his family member faced danger. Would this stop him from trying to make a difference? Would he stop trying because of obstacles? Should he stop trying? In many ways, Keeper of Reign, is an allegorical fantasy, in that it reflects our human plight. At what point do we allow the troubles of this world to stop us from doing what is right? That was Jules's journey to maturity and growth.

Where did the idea for the book come from?

I wanted to write a book with a purpose: to empower young readers with the message that no matter how small they feel (the Elfies were cursed and reduced to an inch tall--that's really small!) they could still make a huge difference, and that if they seek the truth (the Ancient Books in Keeper of Reign) they will find wisdom and answers to life's problems. It doesn't mean the answers are going to come easy, but persistence will pay off. So seek wisdom and it will help each person to live triumphantly; in essence, to reign in life.

Who and what inspire you to write?

Life, children and love inspire me.

Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?

Six years ago as I put my five children (then three to thirteen years of age) to bed, they asked for a story, so I made up a story that involved five children, not unlike them, but in a parallel world where the people have been reduced to a small size. Each night they asked me for more. So I decided to add a theme and put the story to paper. Some seventeen revisions , and five years later, Keeper of Reign 1, the final version, was born.

What has been the most pleasant surprise about writing? How about an unexpected down side?

I was amazed at how people have been touched by the stories. Adults, but especially kids. I guess the downside is that one book is not meant for every kind of reader. Readers' tastes are so different, and it's not possible to write for everyone--like a mass market. I wrote Keeper of Reign for a 10-15/16 year old reader. If adults enjoy it, fine, but, if not then, so be it.

Do you have any writing rituals?

I am more of an organic writer in that I have a story in my head, an idea I'd like to grow, and once I start with the character and the conflict the story blossoms on its own. I just keep writing until the end. So I don't really have a ritual--I just go with the flow. But then once I am done with the first draft, I do try to have some kind of ritual/structure-- I go back to the piece (about six-seven months later) to rearrange scenes and plots so that it has the traditional structure that is recognized as the basic architecture of what a good story should be--the 1/4-1/4/1/4/-1/4 structure. The thing with writing is not to stop.

Do you write your books in order?

I try to write one book at a time, but sometimes in the middle of one book, I have another idea invade my mind and the new story is just waiting for me to download. Alas, it takes time to write a book!

Any favorite writing snacks?

Chocolate covered expression beans. but I can't take too many, unfortunately.

What advice would you give writers who aspire to be published?

Write a million words, read, read, read, and write a greta story that's been trying to bust out of you. And never give up on your dream no matter how many problems life throws at you! You'll eventually get published.

Are you working on anything new right now?

I am currently editing Dead Dreams, a young adult psychological mystery/ thriller, and that should be ready Dec. 2013. And I hope to have Keeper of Reign Book 2 out early 2014. Some readers have asked me to write a prequel for Keeper of Reign. I might. Time is my enemy these days.

Who is your favorite character in your current book?

Probably Jules Blaze, the sixteen-year-old protagonist. He tries so hard to make a difference but he has to face so many obstacles and as a youngster he doesn't see the value of family and a safe home until these things were all lost. It was a lesson he had to learn, to gain wisdom and re-learn what was most important to him--his family and his Kingdom. He faced many conflicted decisions, but through perseverance and some smart moves he realized the importance of the Ancient Books and that he had it within him to overcome Whisperer, the main villain in Book 1.

What is your favorite book of all time?

Lord of the Rings. I love the imageries and the richness of the symbols Tolkien used, yet, at the same time readers can read it at a more superficial level, too--just a story about Hobbits, and the evil Sauron, and Gandalf. But to me it's so much more than just a fun read--even though it's that, too. Tolkien first started with the Hobbit, a children's book, but the novel was such hit, even with adults, that he developed LOTR, which is really three books, broken into three parts, since his publishers felt it would have been too expensive to have it as a single book.

Climb that Fence & Take that Leap is a series of stories from my pets and the interesting life insights I learned from watching them. The short stories are written in a conversational, easy to read format so it can be enjoyed by most anyone. As a fun side note, the other day I opened the book to the story about the sea turtles and their determination. It was a great reminder for me to keep moving ahead.

Where did the idea for the book come from?

I’ve always been involved with animals and one of my first published stories involved an animal event. As I continued to write, I noticed a lot of my stories related to the animals. I really wanted to share these stories, but in a manner that would make a difference for both people and the animals. The idea for the book came from there.

Who and what inspire you to write?

Whenever I read a riveting, descriptive story that just pulls you in and keeps you, I think “wow, I’d like to get to that level” so I keep writing. What inspires me the most are the positive comments from people who follow my writings. It’s nice to know that people enjoy your work.

Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?

I attended this event called Frog Watch which really didn’t sound like a great way to spend a Saturday night. I could think of other things I’d rather be doing, but I went and it was actually quite fun. My girlfriend, at the time, said I should write about it and post the story on the local newspaper’s online community events. I was a volunteer at the state park that hosted the event so it could be great publicity.

I have written essays for college, technical documents at work, but never really composed a story. I had no idea where to start so the first sentence was exactly what I said to her: “You want me to do what? Go watch frogs at night? I wrote the rest of the story just like that; as a conversation, from my first hand perspective. I didn’t think it was anything that great, certainly not anything close to the literary genius that I had studied in college or writing classes.

The local paper printed the article and the next couple of events were filled to capacity. When the park ranger showed me the paper and thanked me for the story, I was blown away.

What has been the most pleasant surprise about writing? How about an unexpected down side?

The most pleasant surprise is the people connections that occur as I talk with people about my latest blog post, article, or this book. We have a lot in common and writing has a way of bringing that out.

An unexpected downside is that while its fun, it can consume a lot of time. I have a hard time writing a story when it’s a beautiful day outside. I do write outside when I can though.

Do you have any writing rituals?

I usually like to take a walk outside because it helps clear the mind and the exercise is good. I’ve gotten some great story ideas on my walks so I carry my phone and record them as they come to mind.

When I started writing, I didn’t think my writing was good enough so I tried to write like everyone else I had studied. What made the biggest difference was what I call “finding my voice”. Once I returned to my natural style, things just flowed so much easier. My writings were more heartfelt and easier to compose. You have to write your natural style; write what comes easy to you and be yourself. The world needs to hear your voice.

And one more thing….as you read tons of information on how hard it is to be published or recognized it can be very, very deflating. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I was fortunate to have a friend who published her book a year before mine. She was excited, shared a wealth of info and was a great motivation.

Where did the idea for the book come from?

It’s a story that has been in my head for a long time now. But it has evolved over time to become what it is. It started from a work crush that I had once and then blossomed from there.

Who and what inspire you to write?

I love to read. I think that is what inspired me to write, mostly. Essentially friends and family that helped push me (gently, of course) to do it, have inspired me as well.

Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?

I wish I had some remarkably poignant moment in my life where I thought, “I should be a writer”, but I don’t. I have always made up stories, though. I used to come up with these huge romantic gestures in my head and then that’s how I would put myself to sleep at night – developing the characters and stories in my mind. I thought that was something everyone did, but I’ve been told that it’s not.

What has been the most pleasant surprise about writing? How about an unexpected down side?

I think the most pleasant surprise is the feeling of accomplishment. I tend to start things and never finish them. So writing, even if I only write a page or two, makes me feel like I’m making progress. Finishing a book was a HUGE accomplishment for me. That was a great feeling. The down side was not unexpected for me. I am, by nature, a procrastinator. So I procrastinate writing, and these stories are in my head, begging to get out and I think, “yes, yes, today is your day my make-believe friend”… but then somehow time slips away and I give the old “tomorrow…I will do it tomorrow” thing.

Do you have any writing rituals?

I like to listen to music when I write. And I like my office space to be clean before I write. That will add to the procrastination, actually. I will think “I should write” and then I will see my office and think “tomorrow… I will do it tomorrow.”

For the most part. If I get a scene in my head, I might jump ahead and write it. Usually it’s only a basic outline because by the time I catch the rest of the book up to that point, things have changed. So I usually have to re-write that part. But sometimes I will get a scene in my head that I need to get out now, or I fear that I will forget it. For the most-part though, I like to go in order.

What is on your writing playlist for this book?

I had a few playlists. Fun, and cheerful songs for when I was writing fun scenes. And then depressing, why-does-my-life-suck songs for depressing/downer scenes. I like a lot of different artists, but I did have a lot of Taylor Swift on my playlists.

I’m self-published. I think a lot of what holds people back is the thought that even if you were to write a book, you have to find a publisher and go through all of that. But it’s a different world out there in the writing universe. Your voice can be heard so much easier now! So just write. Don’t worry about all of the other things. Write first, and make it good - something you would want to read. Then find the right editor, and get the right book cover (your book cover is one of the most important things). There are less edited versions of my book out there and it’s very frustrating! So do it right the first time. But seriously, write your book. It’s fulfilling in so many ways.
