I’m a member of Liberty States Fiction Writers and had read about COP attending one of the conferences. So I submitted my manuscript and then made sure to go to the conference. I introduced myself to the lovely Yelena Casale. We hit it off immediately, and the rest is history as they say.

My experience has been fantastic! Everyone is extremely friendly, professional and so encouraging. I'm so grateful to be a part of this incredible team.

I would love to get my masters in creative writing, get an agent, and write at least three more series and several novellas. I’d love to try some different genres too. Of course, we all dream about hitting the lists, the New York Times, and USA Today would be awesome. I’d love a RITA nomination and hope to do an international book tour. I hope to have at least one of my books optioned for a screenplay and one picked up on Passionflix, which I absolutely love! I want to connect more with readers and hope that my words impact them in some way.

My book is a fast paced, action packed, fantasy that will let you escape to another magickal world and yet the characters are all quite flawed, and down to earth. Kenner (I’ve met and we emailed a few times), Sylvia Day(met her too), and of course JR Ward (I did her workshop).

7. What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

No matter what, don’t give up. Keep sending out those manuscripts. Don’t get stuck holding onto that same MS for ten years. Start fresh work. Enter contests and really take note of what the judges are saying to you. Join a critique group and look at other people’s work. This helps you get better. Read books on how to write. Go to conferences. Take workshops and read, read, read. Don’t take anything personally, easier said than done I know, but remember, it’s all part of the journey.

Plot, Character and Me Suggestions for Putting It Together by Ronald J. Wicherstag:literaryaddicts.ning.com,2019-03-26:6621382:Topic:1108012019-03-26T13:40:51.164ZMichelle Hofackerhttp://literaryaddicts.ning.com/profile/MIchelleHofacker

Plot, Character and Me

Suggestions for Putting It Together

The first element in the writing process is the desire to write. For me it began in high school in a mysterious way, for every time I began to read a piece of fiction I heard a voice inside saying, I can do this. I know I can do this… What made that so mysterious wasn’t only that I heard a voice in my head, but that everything in my world said, “Oh no, no you can’t. No, no...”

As a child I read…

Plot, Character and Me

Suggestions for Putting It Together

The first element in the writing process is the desire to write. For me it began in high school in a mysterious way, for every time I began to read a piece of fiction I heard a voice inside saying, I can do this. I know I can do this… What made that so mysterious wasn’t only that I heard a voice in my head, but that everything in my world said, “Oh no, no you can’t. No, no...”

As a child I read painfully slowly, needing to hear the words in my head before I could comprehend their syntax. I might read an entire paragraph or a whole page before realizing I hadn’t absorbed any of it then stop, go back and start all over until I got it.

Of all the aspects of education, reading is the one necessity that pervades everything. If you can’t read well, you will have problems with virtually everything else in school. I could just barely keep up, was placed with groups considered less gifted or less enthused, tagged as lazy or stupid or both by fellow teachers and family.

That was what made it so odd later on finding myself convinced that I could do what some of the finest writers who ever lived could do, people like Jane Austin, Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stephen Crane, John Dos Passos, Flannery O’Conner, Katherine Mansfield, James Joyce. These and many others were like gods and heroes to me the way they could take a stream of words and create not only images in my brain but sensations all through me – sadness, happiness, longing, contempt.

At first it was a lonely place to find myself in, as the only person wanting me to be a writer was…me. And the few times I mentioned such a desire it was scoffed at as just another day dream or a plot to avoid the realities of an already failed life, one with only drudgery ahead.

But I didn’t just read stories I melted into them as if the pages formed themselves into landscapes or moonscapes or lovescapes. There I was no longer trapped among dots and words and grammatical strictures but cruising along the narrow, wet and glistening streets of Dublin or skulking through the forests of New England or soaring the Highlands of Scotland. There were people there, real people and they didn’t mind me. They made no judgements, drew no conclusions. I was just there, helping it all to come alive. And it wasn’t lonely it was mysterious and filled with wonder.

But the love of reading is one thing, thinking about becoming a writer, wanting to devote one’s entire life to it is something else entirely. To create stories about people, animals, conflagrations, human desires, hardships, acts of evil or kindness, is a big leap for someone whose only conviction up to that point is that they are a failure – a fifteen-year-old…failure. But then sometimes the best thing to do is stop thinking and just do it; just sit down and write every day, every single day. And that’s what I did. Or at least that was what I did after disentangling myself from debilitating emotional anchor chains and dead weight. And as I grew older and saw the world in all its horror and all its glory and came to know the poignancy of life I began to consult those old gods and heroes of mine less as tour guides to magical places; but more as mentors so that I might learn the art of story-telling so to show others what I was seeing.

And not to imitate but simply to learn how they “pull it off”; how those I regard as the great writers from all ages do it – fashion stories in a way that captures the human imagination long enough to transmit an underlying meaning, a lesson, or even something humorous, lighthearted, uplifting, ironic.

To accomplish a completed story, I first must acquire a subject that will work, that has legs, one that will seem to take on a life of its own; a combination of events and personalities that have, in the course time, become deeply embedded in my psyche; events and personalities so striking so captivating as to “rattle around” in my brain sometimes for decades. People, places, events which have, for example, destroyed my future plans; or which contain within them elements of great beauty in the midst of some grinding horror or terror; or debilitating moral dilemmas such as killing people during a war I knew to be unjust; being raised in an environment dominated by a mini-culture of love-hate relationships. Contrasts! That’s what works for me.

To spend my time writing a story, one that might take as long as ten or more years, I must be the first reader, the first to be engaged, captivated as if miraculously. For me, a story succeeds or takes on a life of its own, when it is charged by contrasting, and conflicting elements, contrasting characters, contrasting moral stances within and among characters. Such an atmosphere fosters a lifelike plot, enlivening it with twists and turns in a manner which may at first seem completely illogical, yet ultimately work out in a way totally believable because it all emanates from the real world, it is honest. That doesn’t mean it won’t flop. There is no accounting for taste. But an honest, well-crafted story will not go away.

Fictional characters are things, tools, composites of ideas They carry a story on their backs. It can help to begin with a real person but only as an initial point of reference. Then trust your own imagination to provide stunning uniquenesses. Let them go, as if they really are alive, while keeping them on a leash, a leash of logic, so as not to spoil the overall plan. In letting them go, characters can push a story into unexpected places but they can go too far. They are things, tools. Play god. Trust your instincts without creating a loose cannon. Characters mold the environment of believability. Strive for uniqueness. Avoid stereotyping. A central fictional character must never be a type. Even the less developed characters must always appear as if they were fashioned by a creator who had, at their disposal, an infinite array of uniquenesses. Never to describe a character in words or by checklists. That is the quickest way to disengage a reader.

Virtually all plots can be reduced to a tiny number of types.

But characters no, not if the writer works. This is where a story finds its way into the world as if it all really happened, as if they were historical figures – when they are so well fashioned as to touch us, reach up out of the harshness of print and touch our hearts.

Who could ever forget Charles Dickens’ Scrooge and Cratchit, Boris Pasternak’s Strelnikov and Larisa, Emily Brontë’s Kathy and Heathcliff, Geoffrey Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde?

Interview -

Tell us About your latest book

Summer Sinks is the second release in the Bloodborne series. We follow Dalia to the States as she and her inner dragon quest, one for normalcy and the other for family.

Where did the idea for the book come from?

Funny story, that one. I was running a short story contest for a bookclub and a friend commented that she wished that there were more books featuring Mayan lead character. By the time I finished the tiny story I was hooked. It is now to be a 5 book story run as well as a secondary series based the origins of the legend that it all revolves around.

Who and what inspire you to write?

I have been starting but not finishing books from a very young age. My grandmother was a teacher and my mother always wanted to write. They both passed without finishing their stories. I decided that I would break that trend.

Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?

When I started running an online bookclub the wonderful indie authors there really encouraged me to finish the stories. The first few books are still squirreled away, unfit for publishing.

What has been the most pleasant surprise about writing?

That people enjoy the stories so much. It is really a wonderful thing to have people reach out to me and tell me that.

How about an unexpected down side?

Typos! I can edit and edit and edit and still find a one in a book a year later.!

Do you have any writing rituals?

Music on repeat is really the only thing that is consistent. Sometimes just a single song on repeat.

Do you write your books in order?

Always. I have all 5 books in both series plotted out before I could even start writing the second book. It helps me layer the details into the books.

What is on your writing playlist for this book?

One Direction, don’t judge me.

Any favorite writing snacks?

I can’t eat and type… or drink and type.

What advice would you give writers who aspire to be published?

Finish the book. Ask other authors if they can suggest groups (in person and online) to join to help hone their craft.

Are you working on anything new right now?

Book Three! Wolf Bites should be out this summer. I already have Dragon Keepers (the first book in the series) in draft and hope to get that one published this spring.

Who is your favorite character in your current book?

The dragon, always the Dragon. Celesta Rose is so much fun to write!

What is your favorite book of all time?

This is an impossible question! I am a huge Ilona Andrews fan. Jim Butcher, the list goes on. I just refuse to choose! My favorite book series I read in this last year was the Court of Roses and Thornes.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your book.

Because, you need to meet a Dragon who has waited 5000 years to see you. But really, it is a fast fun and addictive read.

A powerful spirit. A bloodthirsty monster. All leading to a desperate quest. When the Mayan calendar ended some people scoffed while others joked and a few waited for the end of the world. After living half her life apart from her native people, Dalia no longer believes in the supernatural and monstrous things that the final cycle predicted. But unbelief is not protection. Going home draws her into a fight against mythical creatures, limitless power and a battle for humanity’s survival. Can Dalia balance an outsider’s knowledge and tribal wisdom to give the world a fighting chance? Or will she choose to stay blind and let the world collapse around her? Reign Drops is the first book in The Bloodborne Series, a saga of urban fantasy novels. If you like tenacious heroines, Mayan legends, and new twists on magical beasts, then you'll love Chris Patt's spellbinding series. Buy

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

For Breakfield and Bureky, the most difficult part has to be time. Having enough time for all the aspects of storytelling we want to do is sometimes had to find. Capturing the ideas as they pop into our minds is sometimes not doable.

When you are in the middle of a meeting with executives giving a presentation and one of the attendees says something that sparks an idea, one cannot stop and say, I want to use this in a story, can you give me five minutes which could stretch into the rest of the day.

We do have a habit that suggests if one of can’t think of it we throw it over the digital fence and get the other to provide a thought. Breakfield and Burkey are very lucky in that regard.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Family support is important in any career. In the case of Breakfield and Burkey, Sandy Breakfield is our first line editor and totally supports our efforts. Other family members read and comment as requested. From a cheering us forward perspective we have a host of family and friends who make this easier. Even when we don’t win a contest or get that interview spot we really wanted, our family is there applauding our efforts.

If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?

Defining becoming a better writer is a bit of a tricky element to this question. Many of you are likely in the same boat as Breakfield and Burkey. We went to school and learned as much as possible. In each of our cases our parents were insistent that we do well in school, participate, and excel to our potential.

When you look over your shoulder and play the shoulda, coulda routine one can always find gaps or things to do better. Those regrets are not productive unless you are guiding children.

As with anything, the more you do it the better you become. A baseball player or other athlete trains more, plays more gets more coaching, and rises to their potential. If they don’t have talent in the area they realize it at some point and move onto something else.

Perhaps we would have sent in one more article to Reader’s Digest or created one more post for the school newspaper or even taken that special English Creative Writing class.

The best any of us can really do is seize the opportunities presented to us and then press forward. Create that poem, story, song, or novel and share with others. You don’t get better unless you try and unless you are open to objective and constructive criticism on what worked and didn’t work in your creation. Try and try again. You’re only ever beaten when you give up.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

When we first started this series, we were creating more than one book a year or releasing 3 books per year. These were published in eBook and Paperback or trade paper formats. Since technology is the foundation for our stories, we have an endless supply of new ways people use and abuse it. This makes for great story themes as well as relevant discussions for today’s adults. In migrating each of the stories, beginning with the first The Enigma Factor, to audio formats the time available has shifted to a degree.

Breakfield and Bureky listen to each of the chapters of a story to make certain it captures the essence we wanted when it was written. Fortunately, with a great narrator and voice actor like Derek Shoales we also get entertained most of the time. As he has now narrated six of our stories, he is aligned with our intent. He is working on narrating book 8, The Enigma Broker. It still takes time away of writing to do the listening, but worth every minute.

We are also writing more short stories and increasing our meet and greets at libraries, book fairs, and interviewing authors. We are lucky however in that two of us tend to write faster than a single author. We do love writing and storytelling.

Many factors in our lives impact what we think about, how we interact with others, our work, families, and health. Breakfield and Burkey tend to think these influences play a role in providing time for things we want to do. When we don’t have enough time for item A we move to item B and so forth. When we have rested and have time available, we often burn up a keyboard

Tell us a little bit about your book.

The Heartbreak Cowboy is the first full-length book in my Coldiron Cowboys series. McCrea and Eleanor fell in love years ago, but because of fear and circumstances chose to walk away after one night together. The story introduces McCrea to a daughter he never knew existed. It forces him and Eleanor to overcome the mistakes of their past and mend fences for the sake of their daughter.

The Cowboy’s Goodnight Kiss is a prequel to this book and was written so readers could experience the backstory of what happened between McCrea and Eleanor four years earlier. It’s a free download on my website but doesn’t have to be read before The Heartbreak Cowboy. It’s my gift to readers.

Are you currently working on anything else? I’m writing the second book in the series, The Fallen Cowboy, Jess and Mallory’s story. Here’s the blurb.

Out of commission saddle bronc rider Jess Coldiron is putting his horse skills to work by serving as the Executive Director of the Promise Point Horse Rescue Ranch.

Jess’s gift for taming wild broncos and pretty women has taught him that both can take a man from zero to ninety in seconds, shake him senseless, and damn near kill him if he landed the wrong way. And Jess had. So bumping anything but heads with the beautiful Mallory Montgomery ─ his sister-in-law’s estranged sister ─ is out of the question.

Mallory came to Santa Camino, Texas, to fulfill her mother’s dying wish of reuniting with her sister, not to fall for a cowboy with a Texas-sized chip on his shoulder about the limp in his swagger and the woman in his past. But the ruggedly handsome, once famous bronc rider has a sexy smile and a fiery touch that ignites a spark in her every time they’re together.

Mallory knows there’s only one way to get Jess back in the saddle, but she wants more than he’s willing to give. And seducing the fallen cowboy may cost Mallory her heart.

What gets you in the mood to write? I don’t have to be in a mood to write. If I’ve set a deadline, I know I have to write that book and reach my daily word goal.

Who is your favorite character and why? That’s a tough question to answer because I don’t have a favorite character. But I have more fun writing the secondary characters like Jess, Louisa and Brody. They tend to act out more because they know the story isn’t about them and that they’re just there to help move the story along. They also know I’m plotting their story, their character arcs, their happy-every-after and that whatever they do as secondary characters they’ll pay for later when I write their story. For instance, there’s a scene in The Heartbreak Cowboy where Eleanor and her tribe are eating cookies and talking about the hot new guy Violet has hired to help her in the coffee shop. Here’s how it goes…

Louisa shoved a bite of cookie into her mouth. "These things are phenomenal."

"Mmm..." Sage's moan was one of praise.

Violet broke one in half and took a nibble. "They're Joel's special recipe."

"The man bakes?" Louisa whined and licked the tips of her fingers. "Please, God, let him be straight."

"Do you really need a man who bakes?" Sage questioned.

“No,” she said, dusting the crumbs from her fingers. “But I wouldn’t mind eating cookies in his bed.”

Brody Vance, Louisa’s leading man will be showing off his baking skills in Breaking the Cowboy, the third and final book in the series.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book! The Heartbreak Cowboy is a sexy and emotional, second chance romance that will have you laughing, crying and routing for a happy ending from the very first chapter!

*Old flames burn hotter the second time around...*

It’s been four long years since McCrea Coldiron watched Eleanor Mackenna
walk out of his life. He wasn’t ready for the marriage noose then and never
thought he would be. Single, free to do as he pleases, and running the
Promise Point Horse Rescue Ranch are the things that make him sure he was
right to let Eleanor go… This is until she comes back to town with a
daughter he never knew about in tow.

Eleanor knows just how badly McCrea can burn a woman and how persuasive
he can be when he wants something, so she’s more than cautious about
his charming words and cocky grin when she comes home to arrange the
sale of her grandparents’ ranch. But when a flat tire in a thunderstorm
introduces four-year-old Sophie to her daddy, Eleanor knows McCrea’s love
for his daughter is genuine. Can she trust it will be the same for her? As
the icy walls around her heart begin to melt, Eleanor must find the courage
to trust her heart or run away from the man who has always owned it.

“I have loved haunted houses for as long as I can remember,” recounts Bentley-Tales. “When I was kid I was hooked on the Scooby crew who were always going into haunted castles, houses, amusement parks, museums. Heck, you name it, it was haunted!” These sweet-scary childhood memories fueled Bentley-Tales’ storytelling in this book, his first YA horror story. And certainly, developing the story through the eyes of a young gay boy allowed the author to offer a special, inclusive point of view. And while masterfully creating tension and fear through the dark fantasy conflict, the navigation of young love is another great strength Bentley-Tales displays. “There’s a part in the story where Erin wants to make Colton jealous by telling him how much attention Dylan is giving her. I get a good chuckle when I re-read it, as it’s such a typical young love triangle!”

Tell us a little bit about your book.

August is a romantic suspense centered around a hitman who works for an assassin organization. Since the death of his fiancée, August has become accustom to taking the deadliest assignments. Toss in Natalia, who resembles and kinda has the same badass attitude as Barbadian singer, Rihanna, and well, you’ve got yourself a great story.

Have you published before?

Yes, a whole lotta books! I have many Amazon best sellers under my belt in the genre of romantic suspense, erotica, and contemporary.

Are you currently working on anything else?

I am working on a sequel to Make Me Stay, which is a contemporary romance, also a stand alone, but the rave reviews kept asking for more. This second chance romance centers around a bad boy and a feisty, deaf heroine. Book one is filled with drama and the intensity of falling back in love with your childhood romance.

What is your favorite writing snack?

I starve myself while writing LOL. If I’m in the moment, nothing will stop me muhahhahaha. But I do love snickers and Twix.

What gets you in the mood to write?

Green tea and early mornings are my go-to for writing.

Who is your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Victor. Firstly, he’s British and with an accent like that, who wouldn’t love him? Secondly, he’s dangerous and crazy. He’s a multilayered character that has always kept me spellbound. Underneath the dark layers is a really good, loyal guy.

Favorite book of all time?

Wow, that’s a hard one. Not per genre or era, but book of all time is very difficult to answer. I’m picking two because I can’t pick one. The Joy Luck Club and The Great Gatsby because I’m a stickler for characters that cling to me. But if I could pick more, I’ve got a handful of favorite mermaid romance books too.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

After all the ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ sayings I’ve heard as a kid, I usually skip it. But blackberries or applies come in handy when my stomach growls too loudly. Sorry if that’s TMI, I love writing and won’t stop to feed myself.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

One of my favorite periods is Regency Romance. While I haven’t made any attempt at writing it, who doesn’t want a rakish duke?

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

The shock of suspense, angst, laughter, August is a crazy and emotional ride.

August Reiss Seven years ago, the love of my life and my parents died a robbery gone wrong. Do you know what that can do to a professionally trained hitman? Now, I work for a government organization, my next assignment is to infiltrate the Marchand’s crew. The information is vague. But what takes the cake, is that the family “business” of crooks I’m to investigate, includes a Bajan little sister whose lips are the definition of sex and trouble. And yet Natalia’s soft curves are off limits—not because her brothers will bash my head in. No, she is capable of offing me herself.

Natalia Marchand Anything a man can do, I can do it better. I’ve lived by that credo my entire life, and with my dangerous ‘job’ it’s always been true. I’m a rich man’s kryptonite, I can pretend to desire you, and then execute a plan to take all you own. My brother’s and I live a dangerous lifestyle. Then in walks muscles, murky green eyes, and a cocky smile. August needs a place to stay, and he’s saved my kid brother’s life. Now, he’s a god to my brothers. Can he really be trusted? But I'll put a bullet to his head if he proves my intuition is right.

It’s been four long years since McCrea Coldiron watched Eleanor Mackenna walk out of his life. He wasn’t ready for the marriage noose then and never thought he would be. Single, free to do as he pleases, and running the Promise Point Horse Rescue Ranch are the things that make him sure he was right to let Eleanor go… This is until she comes back to town with a daughter he never knew about in tow.

Eleanor knows just how badly McCrea can burn a woman and how persuasive he can be when he wants something, so she’s more than cautious about his charming words and cocky grin when she comes home to arrange the sale of her grandparents’ ranch. But when a flat tire in a thunderstorm introduces four-year-old Sophie to her daddy, Eleanor knows McCrea’s love for his daughter is genuine. Can she trust it will be the same for her? As the icy walls around her heart begin to melt, Eleanor must find the courage to trust her heart or run away from the man who has always owned it.

Being shown what he lost is a wake-up call for McCrea and he isn’t about to let Eleanor or Sophie walk away. It’s time to prove he’s a man who believes in love and happy-ever-after.
