Suggestions for Putting It Together

The first element in the writing process is the desire to write. For me it began in high school in a mysterious way, for every time I began to read a piece of fiction I heard a voice inside saying, I can do this. I know I can do this… What made that so mysterious wasn’t only that I heard a voice in my head, but that everything in my world said, “Oh no, no you can’t. No, no...”

As a child I read painfully slowly, needing to hear the words in my head before I could comprehend their syntax. I might read an entire paragraph or a whole page before realizing I hadn’t absorbed any of it then stop, go back and start all over until I got it.

Of all the aspects of education, reading is the one necessity that pervades everything. If you can’t read well, you will have problems with virtually everything else in school. I could just barely keep up, was placed with groups considered less gifted or less enthused, tagged as lazy or stupid or both by fellow teachers and family.

That was what made it so odd later on finding myself convinced that I could do what some of the finest writers who ever lived could do, people like Jane Austin, Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stephen Crane, John Dos Passos, Flannery O’Conner, Katherine Mansfield, James Joyce. These and many others were like gods and heroes to me the way they could take a stream of words and create not only images in my brain but sensations all through me – sadness, happiness, longing, contempt.

At first it was a lonely place to find myself in, as the only person wanting me to be a writer was…me. And the few times I mentioned such a desire it was scoffed at as just another day dream or a plot to avoid the realities of an already failed life, one with only drudgery ahead.

But I didn’t just read stories I melted into them as if the pages formed themselves into landscapes or moonscapes or lovescapes. There I was no longer trapped among dots and words and grammatical strictures but cruising along the narrow, wet and glistening streets of Dublin or skulking through the forests of New England or soaring the Highlands of Scotland. There were people there, real people and they didn’t mind me. They made no judgements, drew no conclusions. I was just there, helping it all to come alive. And it wasn’t lonely it was mysterious and filled with wonder.

But the love of reading is one thing, thinking about becoming a writer, wanting to devote one’s entire life to it is something else entirely. To create stories about people, animals, conflagrations, human desires, hardships, acts of evil or kindness, is a big leap for someone whose only conviction up to that point is that they are a failure – a fifteen-year-old…failure. But then sometimes the best thing to do is stop thinking and just do it; just sit down and write every day, every single day. And that’s what I did. Or at least that was what I did after disentangling myself from debilitating emotional anchor chains and dead weight. And as I grew older and saw the world in all its horror and all its glory and came to know the poignancy of life I began to consult those old gods and heroes of mine less as tour guides to magical places; but more as mentors so that I might learn the art of story-telling so to show others what I was seeing.

And not to imitate but simply to learn how they “pull it off”; how those I regard as the great writers from all ages do it – fashion stories in a way that captures the human imagination long enough to transmit an underlying meaning, a lesson, or even something humorous, lighthearted, uplifting, ironic.

To accomplish a completed story, I first must acquire a subject that will work, that has legs, one that will seem to take on a life of its own; a combination of events and personalities that have, in the course time, become deeply embedded in my psyche; events and personalities so striking so captivating as to “rattle around” in my brain sometimes for decades. People, places, events which have, for example, destroyed my future plans; or which contain within them elements of great beauty in the midst of some grinding horror or terror; or debilitating moral dilemmas such as killing people during a war I knew to be unjust; being raised in an environment dominated by a mini-culture of love-hate relationships. Contrasts! That’s what works for me.

To spend my time writing a story, one that might take as long as ten or more years, I must be the first reader, the first to be engaged, captivated as if miraculously. For me, a story succeeds or takes on a life of its own, when it is charged by contrasting, and conflicting elements, contrasting characters, contrasting moral stances within and among characters. Such an atmosphere fosters a lifelike plot, enlivening it with twists and turns in a manner which may at first seem completely illogical, yet ultimately work out in a way totally believable because it all emanates from the real world, it is honest. That doesn’t mean it won’t flop. There is no accounting for taste. But an honest, well-crafted story will not go away.

Fictional characters are things, tools, composites of ideas They carry a story on their backs. It can help to begin with a real person but only as an initial point of reference. Then trust your own imagination to provide stunning uniquenesses. Let them go, as if they really are alive, while keeping them on a leash, a leash of logic, so as not to spoil the overall plan. In letting them go, characters can push a story into unexpected places but they can go too far. They are things, tools. Play god. Trust your instincts without creating a loose cannon. Characters mold the environment of believability. Strive for uniqueness. Avoid stereotyping. A central fictional character must never be a type. Even the less developed characters must always appear as if they were fashioned by a creator who had, at their disposal, an infinite array of uniquenesses. Never to describe a character in words or by checklists. That is the quickest way to disengage a reader.

Virtually all plots can be reduced to a tiny number of types.

But characters no, not if the writer works. This is where a story finds its way into the world as if it all really happened, as if they were historical figures – when they are so well fashioned as to touch us, reach up out of the harshness of print and touch our hearts.

Who could ever forget Charles Dickens’ Scrooge and Cratchit, Boris Pasternak’s Strelnikov and Larisa, Emily Brontë’s Kathy and Heathcliff, Geoffrey Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde?

Interview -

Tell us About your latest book

Summer Sinks is the second release in the Bloodborne series. We follow Dalia to the States as she and her inner dragon quest, one for normalcy and the other for family.

Where did the idea for the book come from?

Funny story, that one. I was running a short story contest for a bookclub and a friend commented that she wished that there were more books featuring Mayan lead character. By the time I finished the tiny story I was hooked. It is now to be a 5 book story run as well as a secondary series based the origins of the legend that it all revolves around.

Who and what inspire you to write?

I have been starting but not finishing books from a very young age. My grandmother was a teacher and my mother always wanted to write. They both passed without finishing their stories. I decided that I would break that trend.

Each author has his or her own inspiring journey. How did you begin writing?

When I started running an online bookclub the wonderful indie authors there really encouraged me to finish the stories. The first few books are still squirreled away, unfit for publishing.

What has been the most pleasant surprise about writing?

That people enjoy the stories so much. It is really a wonderful thing to have people reach out to me and tell me that.

How about an unexpected down side?

Typos! I can edit and edit and edit and still find a one in a book a year later.!

Do you have any writing rituals?

Music on repeat is really the only thing that is consistent. Sometimes just a single song on repeat.

Do you write your books in order?

Always. I have all 5 books in both series plotted out before I could even start writing the second book. It helps me layer the details into the books.

What is on your writing playlist for this book?

One Direction, don’t judge me.

Any favorite writing snacks?

I can’t eat and type… or drink and type.

What advice would you give writers who aspire to be published?

Finish the book. Ask other authors if they can suggest groups (in person and online) to join to help hone their craft.

Are you working on anything new right now?

Book Three! Wolf Bites should be out this summer. I already have Dragon Keepers (the first book in the series) in draft and hope to get that one published this spring.

Who is your favorite character in your current book?

The dragon, always the Dragon. Celesta Rose is so much fun to write!

What is your favorite book of all time?

This is an impossible question! I am a huge Ilona Andrews fan. Jim Butcher, the list goes on. I just refuse to choose! My favorite book series I read in this last year was the Court of Roses and Thornes.

Tell us in one sentence why we should read your book.

Because, you need to meet a Dragon who has waited 5000 years to see you. But really, it is a fast fun and addictive read.

A powerful spirit. A bloodthirsty monster. All leading to a desperate quest. When the Mayan calendar ended some people scoffed while others joked and a few waited for the end of the world. After living half her life apart from her native people, Dalia no longer believes in the supernatural and monstrous things that the final cycle predicted. But unbelief is not protection. Going home draws her into a fight against mythical creatures, limitless power and a battle for humanity’s survival. Can Dalia balance an outsider’s knowledge and tribal wisdom to give the world a fighting chance? Or will she choose to stay blind and let the world collapse around her? Reign Drops is the first book in The Bloodborne Series, a saga of urban fantasy novels. If you like tenacious heroines, Mayan legends, and new twists on magical beasts, then you'll love Chris Patt's spellbinding series. Buy

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

For Breakfield and Bureky, the most difficult part has to be time. Having enough time for all the aspects of storytelling we want to do is sometimes had to find. Capturing the ideas as they pop into our minds is sometimes not doable.

When you are in the middle of a meeting with executives giving a presentation and one of the attendees says something that sparks an idea, one cannot stop and say, I want to use this in a story, can you give me five minutes which could stretch into the rest of the day.

We do have a habit that suggests if one of can’t think of it we throw it over the digital fence and get the other to provide a thought. Breakfield and Burkey are very lucky in that regard.

Does your family support your career as a writer?

Family support is important in any career. In the case of Breakfield and Burkey, Sandy Breakfield is our first line editor and totally supports our efforts. Other family members read and comment as requested. From a cheering us forward perspective we have a host of family and friends who make this easier. Even when we don’t win a contest or get that interview spot we really wanted, our family is there applauding our efforts.

If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?

Defining becoming a better writer is a bit of a tricky element to this question. Many of you are likely in the same boat as Breakfield and Burkey. We went to school and learned as much as possible. In each of our cases our parents were insistent that we do well in school, participate, and excel to our potential.

When you look over your shoulder and play the shoulda, coulda routine one can always find gaps or things to do better. Those regrets are not productive unless you are guiding children.

As with anything, the more you do it the better you become. A baseball player or other athlete trains more, plays more gets more coaching, and rises to their potential. If they don’t have talent in the area they realize it at some point and move onto something else.

Perhaps we would have sent in one more article to Reader’s Digest or created one more post for the school newspaper or even taken that special English Creative Writing class.

The best any of us can really do is seize the opportunities presented to us and then press forward. Create that poem, story, song, or novel and share with others. You don’t get better unless you try and unless you are open to objective and constructive criticism on what worked and didn’t work in your creation. Try and try again. You’re only ever beaten when you give up.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

When we first started this series, we were creating more than one book a year or releasing 3 books per year. These were published in eBook and Paperback or trade paper formats. Since technology is the foundation for our stories, we have an endless supply of new ways people use and abuse it. This makes for great story themes as well as relevant discussions for today’s adults. In migrating each of the stories, beginning with the first The Enigma Factor, to audio formats the time available has shifted to a degree.

Breakfield and Bureky listen to each of the chapters of a story to make certain it captures the essence we wanted when it was written. Fortunately, with a great narrator and voice actor like Derek Shoales we also get entertained most of the time. As he has now narrated six of our stories, he is aligned with our intent. He is working on narrating book 8, The Enigma Broker. It still takes time away of writing to do the listening, but worth every minute.

We are also writing more short stories and increasing our meet and greets at libraries, book fairs, and interviewing authors. We are lucky however in that two of us tend to write faster than a single author. We do love writing and storytelling.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

When you have nothing to say then do something else. Many factors in our lives impact what we think about, how we interact with others, our work, families, and health. Breakfield and Burkey tend to think these influences play a role in providing time for things we want to do. When we don’t have enough time for item A we move to item B and so forth. When we have rested and have time available, we often burn up a keyboard

Tell us a little bit about your book.

The Heartbreak Cowboy is the first full-length book in my Coldiron Cowboys series. McCrea and Eleanor fell in love years ago, but because of fear and circumstances chose to walk away after one night together. The story introduces McCrea to a daughter he never knew existed. It forces him and Eleanor to overcome the mistakes of their past and mend fences for the sake of their daughter.

The Cowboy’s Goodnight Kiss is a prequel to this book and was written so readers could experience the backstory of what happened between McCrea and Eleanor four years earlier. It’s a free download on my website but doesn’t have to be read before The Heartbreak Cowboy. It’s my gift to readers.

Are you currently working on anything else? I’m writing the second book in the series, The Fallen Cowboy, Jess and Mallory’s story. Here’s the blurb.

Out of commission saddle bronc rider Jess Coldiron is putting his horse skills to work by serving as the Executive Director of the Promise Point Horse Rescue Ranch.

Jess’s gift for taming wild broncos and pretty women has taught him that both can take a man from zero to ninety in seconds, shake him senseless, and damn near kill him if he landed the wrong way. And Jess had. So bumping anything but heads with the beautiful Mallory Montgomery ─ his sister-in-law’s estranged sister ─ is out of the question.

Mallory came to Santa Camino, Texas, to fulfill her mother’s dying wish of reuniting with her sister, not to fall for a cowboy with a Texas-sized chip on his shoulder about the limp in his swagger and the woman in his past. But the ruggedly handsome, once famous bronc rider has a sexy smile and a fiery touch that ignites a spark in her every time they’re together.

Mallory knows there’s only one way to get Jess back in the saddle, but she wants more than he’s willing to give. And seducing the fallen cowboy may cost Mallory her heart.

What gets you in the mood to write? I don’t have to be in a mood to write. If I’ve set a deadline, I know I have to write that book and reach my daily word goal.

Who is your favorite character and why? That’s a tough question to answer because I don’t have a favorite character. But I have more fun writing the secondary characters like Jess, Louisa and Brody. They tend to act out more because they know the story isn’t about them and that they’re just there to help move the story along. They also know I’m plotting their story, their character arcs, their happy-every-after and that whatever they do as secondary characters they’ll pay for later when I write their story. For instance, there’s a scene in The Heartbreak Cowboy where Eleanor and her tribe are eating cookies and talking about the hot new guy Violet has hired to help her in the coffee shop. Here’s how it goes…

Louisa shoved a bite of cookie into her mouth. "These things are phenomenal."

"Mmm..." Sage's moan was one of praise.

Violet broke one in half and took a nibble. "They're Joel's special recipe."

"The man bakes?" Louisa whined and licked the tips of her fingers. "Please, God, let him be straight."

"Do you really need a man who bakes?" Sage questioned.

“No,” she said, dusting the crumbs from her fingers. “But I wouldn’t mind eating cookies in his bed.”

Brody Vance, Louisa’s leading man will be showing off his baking skills in Breaking the Cowboy, the third and final book in the series.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book! The Heartbreak Cowboy is a sexy and emotional, second chance romance that will have you laughing, crying and routing for a happy ending from the very first chapter!

*Old flames burn hotter the second time around...*

It’s been four long years since McCrea Coldiron watched Eleanor Mackenna
walk out of his life. He wasn’t ready for the marriage noose then and never
thought he would be. Single, free to do as he pleases, and running the
Promise Point Horse Rescue Ranch are the things that make him sure he was
right to let Eleanor go… This is until she comes back to town with a
daughter he never knew about in tow.

Eleanor knows just how badly McCrea can burn a woman and how persuasive
he can be when he wants something, so she’s more than cautious about
his charming words and cocky grin when she comes home to arrange the
sale of her grandparents’ ranch. But when a flat tire in a thunderstorm
introduces four-year-old Sophie to her daddy, Eleanor knows McCrea’s love
for his daughter is genuine. Can she trust it will be the same for her? As
the icy walls around her heart begin to melt, Eleanor must find the courage
to trust her heart or run away from the man who has always owned it.

Tell us a little bit about your book.

August is a romantic suspense centered around a hitman who works for an assassin organization. Since the death of his fiancée, August has become accustom to taking the deadliest assignments. Toss in Natalia, who resembles and kinda has the same badass attitude as Barbadian singer, Rihanna, and well, you’ve got yourself a great story.

Have you published before?

Yes, a whole lotta books! I have many Amazon best sellers under my belt in the genre of romantic suspense, erotica, and contemporary.

Are you currently working on anything else?

I am working on a sequel to Make Me Stay, which is a contemporary romance, also a stand alone, but the rave reviews kept asking for more. This second chance romance centers around a bad boy and a feisty, deaf heroine. Book one is filled with drama and the intensity of falling back in love with your childhood romance.

What is your favorite writing snack?

I starve myself while writing LOL. If I’m in the moment, nothing will stop me muhahhahaha. But I do love snickers and Twix.

What gets you in the mood to write?

Green tea and early mornings are my go-to for writing.

Who is your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is Victor. Firstly, he’s British and with an accent like that, who wouldn’t love him? Secondly, he’s dangerous and crazy. He’s a multilayered character that has always kept me spellbound. Underneath the dark layers is a really good, loyal guy.

Favorite book of all time?

Wow, that’s a hard one. Not per genre or era, but book of all time is very difficult to answer. I’m picking two because I can’t pick one. The Joy Luck Club and The Great Gatsby because I’m a stickler for characters that cling to me. But if I could pick more, I’ve got a handful of favorite mermaid romance books too.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

After all the ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ sayings I’ve heard as a kid, I usually skip it. But blackberries or applies come in handy when my stomach growls too loudly. Sorry if that’s TMI, I love writing and won’t stop to feed myself.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

One of my favorite periods is Regency Romance. While I haven’t made any attempt at writing it, who doesn’t want a rakish duke?

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

The shock of suspense, angst, laughter, August is a crazy and emotional ride.

August Reiss Seven years ago, the love of my life and my parents died a robbery gone wrong. Do you know what that can do to a professionally trained hitman? Now, I work for a government organization, my next assignment is to infiltrate the Marchand’s crew. The information is vague. But what takes the cake, is that the family “business” of crooks I’m to investigate, includes a Bajan little sister whose lips are the definition of sex and trouble. And yet Natalia’s soft curves are off limits—not because her brothers will bash my head in. No, she is capable of offing me herself.

Natalia Marchand Anything a man can do, I can do it better. I’ve lived by that credo my entire life, and with my dangerous ‘job’ it’s always been true. I’m a rich man’s kryptonite, I can pretend to desire you, and then execute a plan to take all you own. My brother’s and I live a dangerous lifestyle. Then in walks muscles, murky green eyes, and a cocky smile. August needs a place to stay, and he’s saved my kid brother’s life. Now, he’s a god to my brothers. Can he really be trusted? But I'll put a bullet to his head if he proves my intuition is right.

Tell us a little bit about your book.

The Dociles is the first installment in The Secret Archives Trilogy. This is a Young Adult, Dystopian novel with a new twist on the zombie genre.

For hundreds of years, the residents of The Commune lived within the protection of the wall separating them from the frenzied creatures on the other side. Recently, people have mysteriously gone missing. The leaders claimed these people wandered beyond the wall and were attacked by the monsters. Jennie Caraway and her friends soon discover the truth of these disappearances, and it is far more sinister than the lie told.

Have you published before?

Yes, this will be the third story I have published. My debut novel, The Crimson Tree, is a paranormal suspense. A complete list of my works can be found here: https://www.valeriepuri.com/books

Are you currently working on anything else?

I am currently working on a high fantasy series complete with elves, humans, drama, and magic. Just a few days ago, I started the second book of The Secret Archives Trilogy. This book follows the events of The Dociles and continues Jennie’s story.

What is your favorite writing snack?

Popcorn. I love a light and crunch snack. I even have a popcorn machine, because nothing beats fresh popped popcorn.

What gets you in the mood to write?

I enjoy going on evening walks to mull over story ideas. It helps to share my thoughts with my husband and bounce ideas off him. After walking, I like to relax with my laptop and start writing.

Who is your favorite character and why?

My favorite character in The Dociles is Marlene. She has been around a long time and seen things those around her couldn’t possibly fathom. Her stubbornness is only matched by her strength. She’s done some terrible things in her past, but has tried to make up for it as best she can. There is still a lot to tell about her, but I don’t want to give anything away.

Favorite book of all time?

This is like choosing your favorite child! I would have to say that the Harry Potter series is my favorite collection of books. The adventures of Harry and his friends gave me a much needed mental break when I was in school. I still enjoy re-reading them.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

Eggs, bacon, waffles, orange juice, and coffee. This is a winning combination.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

I don’t have a particular time period I like to write about, but I think it would be interesting to live during the Victorian era. There was so much attention to detail in everything they created such as buildings, clothing, and furniture. It would be very interesting to witness the creation of groundbreaking innovations we still benefit from today.

I call Incognolio a psychological thriller, however it also contains elements of mystery, science fiction, and fantasy. More importantly, it’s a page-turner!

I wrote the first draft with no plan in mind, other than a protagonist who is writing a novel without thought or planning, giving his subconscious mind free rein. Like the reader, I had no idea what would happen next, and the story is full of surprises.

Although it’s essentially a comic novel, the story also delves into some dark and disturbing territory. And while the tale meanders and often leaves subplots unresolved, by the end it somehow manages to form a satisfying whole. I would say, however, that readers who enjoy quirky, unconventional novels will probably enjoy it the most.

Have you published before?

I’m a clinical psychologist and have published two professional books, A Curious Calling: Unconscious Motivations for Practicing Psychotherapy and A Perilous Calling: The Hazards of Psychotherapy Practice.

I’ve also published a children’s picture book—Otto Grows Down—and a Young Adult novel called Crashing Eden.

Are you currently working on anything else?

I’m working on a sequel to my children’s picture book—Duckworth, the Difficult Child—which will be published in 2019 by Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. I am also writing a comic sci-fi Middle Grade novel.

What is your favorite writing snack?

Chocolate, without a doubt.

What gets you in the mood to write?

When I’ve got a good idea for a story, I don’t need to get in the mood to write, I just write, excited and inspired by the productions of my imagination.

Who is your favorite character and why?

Huckleberry Finn. I love the way he narrates his story, his honesty and naiveté, his loyalty to Jim, and his willingness to help Jim escape from slavery, even though Huck is convinced that by doing so he will surely be punished in the afterlife.

Favorite book of all time?

I can’t pick just one. My favorites include The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Idiot by Dostoyevsky, Lolita by Nabakov, Nine Short Stories by J.D. Salinger, and East of Eden by Steinbeck.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

French toast made with challah, served with fresh fruit and genuine maple syrup.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

I would like to live in a future era in which humans have learned to take care of the earth, promote the welfare of all animals, and live together in peace.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

Because it is hilarious, suspenseful, mind-boggling, and unlike any other novel you’ve ever read.

Bewildered but lovable author, Muldoon, is trapped in the dreamlike narrative of his own surrealistic novel. Beginning with just a title—Incognolio—he enters a bizarre fictional realm that plunges him into an identity crisis of anguishing proportions.
Bio:

Abandoned by a cackle of laughing hyenas, Michael Sussman endured the drudgery and hardships of a Moldavian orphanage until fleeing with a traveling circus at the age of twelve. A promising career as a trapeze artist was cut short by a concussion that rendered him lame and mute. Sussman wandered the world, getting by on such odd jobs as pet-food tester, cheese sculptor, human scarecrow, and professional mourner while teaching himself the art of fiction. He now lives in Tahiti with Gauguin, an African Grey parrot.

Spontaneous, fifteen-year-old Gretchen vows to help heal the nation from the recently ended Civil War. On the morning of President Lincoln’s death, Gretchen finds an amnesiac Confederate in her garden and believes this is her chance for civic goodwill.

But reconciliation is not as simple as Gretchen assumed. When her mother returns from the market with news that a Confederate murdered the president, Gretchen wonders if she caught the killer. Tensions between her aunt and mother rise as Gretchen nurses her Confederate prisoner, revealing secrets from their past that make Gretchen question everything she knows about loyalty, honor, and trust.

The Last April is an entertaining, thoughtful novella of Ohio after the Civil War, meant to encourage readers to reflect on themes of fear and hope in uncertain political times.

Have you published before?

Yes, I have two other historical novels under this name. I am also the author of non-fiction and children’s storybooks under the name Binaebi Akah. I am in nine publications, including short stories and contributions to non-fiction works.

Are you currently working on anything else?

My journal is filling with percolating ideas. Most seem to center around my first ever sequel to my Victorian gothic comedy, Haunting Miss Trentwood. I’m also toying with another children’s story book.

What is your favorite writing snack?

Does tea count? If yes, then definitely a rooibos vanilla tea, no sugar, and make sure not to burn the tea leaves! If no, then probably… Cheez-its. Crunchy, salty, satisfying.

What gets you in the mood to write?

Reading is the quickest way to break a writer’s block for me. When I’m having trouble writing, I start reading books back-to-back. My suspicion is that writing drains the inkwell, and I need to read to replenish. Especially if I’ve spent too much time on the internet, I will read paperback books to step away from the screen. That’s a fantastic way to rekindle the feeling to write.

Who is your favorite character and why?

In The Last April, my favorite character is Tante Klegg. She’s pragmatic and knows who she is. She doesn’t let anyone take advantage of her, yet she lets others make their own mistakes in order to learn from them. She’s so much fun.

Across all the books I’ve ever read? That’s an impossible question, but I’m game to try answering anyway! Not to be cliche, but I love Elizabeth Bennet for her self-assuredness and willingness to admit when she’s wrong. She knows her own mind (a theme you’ll find with me), she doesn’t whine or pine after anyone, she’s loyal to her crazy family while admitting their faults… She’s just, well, really well-adjusted and clever!

Favorite book of all time?

I read Pride and Prejudice seventeen times between the ages of 9 and 18. Beyond that, I don’t think I’ve ever read any other book more than two or three times. I adore the dialogue between Elizabeth and Darcy because while they don’t really like each other from the start, there’s a grudging respect of each other’s intellect that I find really appealing and reasonable.

I also kind of love the fact that Elizabeth gets duped by a guy (we’ve all been there). It’s really interesting to watch Elizabeth grow up beyond the pretty boy with the charm and flattery, instead looking beyond first impressions (the original title, by the way) to realize this other guy is far more respectful, respectable, and uses his wealth responsibly. You want Darcy in your corner when the poo hits the fan, guys.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

Egg-white scramble with spinach, tomato, avocado, and feta cheese, with a buttered english muffin on the side.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

I like writing about English and American women living between 1860 and 1901 for a variety of reasons, but mainly, because this was the first time in the “modern” western world where women gained autonomy.

In the United States, the Civil War suddenly left women alone on the homefront, and they began taking the place of men in numbers far greater than even in WWII. I believe the Civil War killed more Americans than any other war before or since, so can you imagine what that did to those left behind?

In England, laws were passed in the 1870s granting property rights to married women. This meant that men could no longer assume their wives’ property and wealth upon marriage… should a scandalous divorce occur, the woman could keep her dowry or inheritance, essentially granting her freedom. It was a radical time, and certainly there were more rights to follow, such as access rights to their children should the marriage fall apart, and the right to vote. None of those progressions could have occurred without the right to own property. It’s super fascinating stuff!

Tell us a little bit about your book.

The idea for this book came about when I was writing a business plan for my special education advocacy business. I realized I had a lot of experience, but wasn’t sure how to depart it to clients at only an hour or two a week. A book seemed like a natural fit. I created the book as a resource for moms who are looking for answers, but also struggling to make it through the process. The book is unique in that it covers the emotional aspects of parenting a child with different needs. It also talks a lot about taking charge of your child’s education because the reality is the schools are never going to do enough. I want parents to be comforted, inspired and empowered, knowing that they have everything it takes to help their child find success.

Have you published before?

I co-authored a book on auditory processing disorder called Same Journey, Different Path: Stories of Auditory Processing Disorder (https://www.amazon.com/Journey-Different-Auditory-Processing-Disorder/dp/1626207291/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1524013009&sr=8-2&keywords=same+path+different+journey) I have also published a deck of cards called Grounded for Life, 52 exercises for daily grounding (https://www.specialmomadvocate.com/product/grounded-for-life/)

Are you currently working on anything else?

I am working on another book that I plan to have published in February 2019. It is about alternative therapies for special education. I am a big believer in looking beyond the schools to help our children improve or overcome their disabilities. It’s never going to happen with just school support, so parents need to know what else they can do at home.

What is your favorite writing snack?

Smoked almonds. I love them and can only take them in small amounts because I will eat way too many if left unattended with a large bag.

What gets you in the mood to write?

Prayer and grounding. First I pray, asking that whatever words need to come through will come through. Then I do grounding, sensing my body in space so I can be fully present with my work. I also play American Indian drumming music. I have no idea why, but that music pulls me into a very creative space.

Who is your favorite character and why?

My book is non-fiction, so I would have to say my favorite character is my older son. While I have done all the work to find solutions for him, he is the one who had to do all the therapies or struggle before we found the right help. He has been through quite an arduous journey, and he has a strong, confident personality as a result. He inspires me every day with his desire to succeed and enjoy life.

Favorite book of all time?

I would have to say Touch of Light: The Story of Louis Braille (https://www.amazon.com/Touch-Light-Story-Louis-Braille/dp/0152896058). I read this book in 8th grade, but the story inspired me in a way that shaped how I saw life. Louis Braille was accidentally blinded by his father. Despite his disability, he wanted very much to be able to read. He went on to create braille, which allowed millions around the world to have access to books. As an avid reader the story brought me joy, but it also taught me that despite our challenges, we can find a way to make good come out of them.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

My breakfast is simple. I have a bulletproof coffee (coffee with coconut oil blended together) and some protein; usually bacon because you can never eat enough bacon.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

I would love to go back to live as a teenager in the 1950s. I think life was easier back then, and people were more carefree.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

Because you’re a special needs mom who is tired and you want an easier way to help your child find success.

“Your son’s brain function is severely abnormal. I would recommend you begin saving for his group home care as an adult.”

Any mom would be crushed by this dire pessimistic prediction, but Bonnie did not let this UCLA neuropsychologist’s edict determine her son’s fate. Combining relentless determination with research, learning and in-depth discussions with professionals, Bonnie found ways to help him progress from ‘severely abnormal’ to honor roll student.

In the Special Ed Mom Survival Guide, Bonnie leads you through the vital steps necessary to survive as a Special Ed Mom. From learning how to manage the emotional overwhelm, to figuring out how to get the school to say yes, Bonnie presents a roadmap that leads you through this confusing obstacle course. Sharing tried and true methods, Bonnie teaches you to find your own inner compass so you can gain the ability and confidence to make decisions that bring results for your child. Based on personal and professional experience, Bonnie will help you to:

Create the Right Mindset

Take Care of Yourself

Take Care of Your Child

Understand the Special Ed Process

Take Charge of the Special Ed Process

“If only I had had a guide to help me navigate all the challenges,” Bonnie says. “Then I could have focused more on my child and less on learning how to get help.” Every Special Ed Mom needs this guide to help make the journey easier!

Bonnie has spent the better part of 25 years as a graphic designer and artist. Always a lover of psychology and the forces that influence behavior, it was a natural transition for her to begin working to resolve her oldest son’s special education challenges. When he was six, a neuropsychologist said he was beyond help, and to plan for his group home care as an adult. Bonnie could not accept that nothing could be done, and she set on a path to find solutions to help her son. He is now an honor student and destined to live a typical life.

Having been through the special ed system as a mom, and now as a advocate and counselor, she saw the need for support for the parents who carry this challenging burden. She has helped parents who struggle with districts who refused services, and she has coached parents in finding ways help their child succeed against the odds. Bonnie knows the fear a mother feels when her child’s future is uncertain, and that is why she chose to shift her life focus into educational consulting. She has a thriving practice as an educational consultant and advocate for parents who find themselves struggling with the special education journey.

She is the author of Special Ed Mom Survival Guide: How to prevail in the special ed process while discovering life-long strategies for both you and your child. She is also the creator of Grounded for Life: 52 Exercises for Daily Grounding, and co-author of Same Journey, Different Paths: Stories of Auditory Processing Disorder. She has a masters in educational counseling and another in spiritual psychology. Her bachelors degree is in architecture. She lives in Ventura County, California with her husband, two boys and their two furry felines.

Tell us a little bit about your book.

Sure. Think: offbeat comedy. Edger (pronounced Ed-jer) is a 26-year-old gadget retail dork who gets to become the world’s first superhero. His power? The ability to channel the Collective Unconscious, a psychic network connecting the living and the dead. The skills of Bruce Lee, the strength of Samson, and the dance moves of Michael Jackson (including that one twisty foot move, the crotch grab, and the fedora tilt) are his to command. The catch? Someone seems to have misplaced the component necessary for stabilizing this awesome power. Without that, Edger has only three days before his brain blows up.

At its heart, Edger is a superhero romantic comedy. But, you know, it’s got a little something for everyone, including: a sexy super spy, a horny boy choir, a Calvin Klein underwear model (with an absolutely spectacular butt), a Cookie Thief of Destiny, a rather dickish magician, juvenile acronyms, and, naturally, a compelling scene where two people drink tea in the kitchen for a heart-to-heart.

Have you published before?

Yes, twice. One is a short story about a talking breakfast sandwich with a mysterious past. The other features the Ark of the Covenant and a cellist aikido master who runs around on the tops of trains to save the world. Surprisingly, one of the two is not a comedy. You’ll have to guess which.

Are you currently working on anything else?

Yes. A time machine. I’m building it out of katanas and bamboo cutting mats. Because real men MacGyver that shit.

What is your favorite writing snack?

Bananas!

What gets you in the mood to write?

Beethoven!

(Seriously, though. I love Beethoven almost as much as I love bananas. Nothing gets me in the mood to write like Beethoven and bananas: Ba-na-na-naaaaaa! Ba-na-na-naaaa!)

Who is your favorite character and why?

That’s a toss-up. On the one hand, there’s Don Quixote. I mean, Don Quixote starts off unassuming enough. He’s just an avid reader, you know? He could be any of us. But then he starts to lose himself in all these tales of daring do, knights, and chivalry. He starts thinking he’s a character in his book! Things get weird. He dedicates himself to becoming more than just a man. He wants to become a symbol. Something elemental. A bat. Next thing you know, he’s patrolling the streets of Gotham—boom. Mind blown. Don Quixote was really ahead of its time.

Another favorite character is Stick Dog from Stick Dog Chases a Pizza. I mean, who can’t identify with that? I guess I’m saying it’s hard to choose just one favorite.

Favorite book of all time?

Good Omens.

I think breakfast says a lot about a person, what is your perfect breakfast?

Cereal. But I like to chop it up into small little bits. Call me a cereal killer, but that’s how I like it.

Do you have a favorite period of time that you like to write about or would like to live?

The Cretaceous Period. I think humankind really peaked with the foot-powered cars and the rock wheels. There’d be less morbid obesity in this world if everyone had to foot-power their cars on rock wheels. Also, I crave a Triceratops burger with guac.

Please tell us in one sentence why we should read your book!

That’s easy, because it’s better than the movie!
